Not taking anything away from palm strikes but...

You do know in Pancrase they cant strike to the head with a clenched fist?..

Yet when Bas hit the body he used a closed fist.

I'm not sure what he used to the head in his UFC fights, I'd guess the fist though.

the rule is soft weapons for hard targets: palm to head. hard weapon for soft targets: punches to body. thats a good rule of thumb anyway, but i think the pancrase rules did forbid punches to the head.

The atire was a bit strange.

The palms were the only thing allowed tot he head. However, its proabaly not a bad idea considering they didn't have gloves, and in the street nobody does. This certainly shows that palms CAN be very effective, though it doesn't show weather punches would be more or less effective for the same thing (due to rules). I think using palms on the head is logical without gloves. Broken hands suck.

I like the old Keith Hackney fight where he leveled teh Sumo guy with the palm strikes to the temple. Hackney still broke his hand though and couldnt continue. Hackney gave Royce a awesome run though, he ran outta gas else he may have beaten Royce, Rocye was having his hands full with Hackney

Yep, fists on skulls can break hands, palms are certainly very nice.

This is another reason I think gloves give strikers a HUGE help in NHB.

nah gloves hinder them it gives the grappler a handle he wouldnt otherwise have on a sweaty opponent...they also allow punchers to keep throwing dumbass punches to the head take the gloves away and the palms will become evident, Bas found them pretty quick

No, gloves prevent people from breaking thier hands.

They also hinder grip fro a grappler way more than they create a bulb for a handle.

well there has to be at least some rules helping strikers out otherwise it would completely biased towards ground...

It's called a stand up....and back in the day they even had rope breaks. You had 5 points....if you got knocked down you lost a point if you were caught in a sub..you could grab the ropes but you lose a point....lose all 5 points and the fight is over you lose a tech dec.Of course most fights ended by a sub or ko though.
