Question

I'd say I need to train more on my take downs for sure. What do you think you need to work on more?

I could use work on all areas but I think mostly I need to work on my conditioning. I am such a lazy bastard. Sometimes it kills me to get off the couch and do push-ups/situps. I'm sure you meant techniques or something but more and more I am coming to realize that conditioning is a HUGE part of a MMA arsenal.

Well, back to finish my Moonpie!

ROTFL

Man it's like you grabbed that post right out of my head (except the moonpie part. I'm partial to Chips Ahoy). my "wind" isn't good enough to last a full five minute round, so I find myself on the defensive side a lot, debating whether I should give up a submission to end it early. I would like to say that determination, and heart keep me going, but I can't lie to myself. It's the fear of pain from whatever submission I would give up that keeps me going. It's not as bad when they take the submission, and you keep fighting to get out, but the second you let up a little, it seems to sink in deep and that's the part I'm trying to avoid

as far as skill sets, I need work on: passing the guard (open, closed, half, etc), escaping the mount, getting chokes, armbars, leg locks, shoulder locks, the list goes on here. My takedown skills reek, and my takedown defense is even worse. I got a mean armbar from the open guard, though. I'm also good at delaying the inevitable when someone attempts the armbar now. I don't just flop right into it. I can spin out, and stack 'em for a while. Then sometimes I get out, sometimes I flop right into it At least there's a chance now.

Plain and simple...my guard sucks.

I am slightly better at escaping the mount and working from top position.

But only slightly.

Jag- I hear you man! I guess you know what I was talking about huh? I know what you mean about the fear of pain but I would bet that we wouldn't have that fear of getting injuried if our conditioning was better....waddyathink?

As for skills, I really need to work on my armbars. I telegraph too much and take too long to make up my mind going into one.

My only real weak point is probably armbars and ankle locks. I'm not really into submissions for the most part. I prefer to strike, even on the ground. I'm pretty decent at chokes though. I CAN do armbars and ankle locks but they are sloppy. And even though they are great for competition, joint submissions for the street are something that I'm not that comfortable with. Sure if you break a guy's arm he probably won't want to fight anymore, but if you choke him out or knock him out he CAN'T fight anymore.

Also my conditioning is not what it used to be. I've gotten out of shape recently. I can still do one armed push-ups on just my thumb and index finger but it's a lot harder than it used to be.

I would like to learn to do suplexs better.

I am not perfect but well rounded(Boxing/Kicking/Grappling) there is always room for improvement so I train & try to learn more about everything.

punches, that's what I forgot. thanks Badger. Or should I say Jack of all trades....

sccr06,
If I had some strength, and a higher pain threshold (which is actually improving, I don't tap from the forearm in the throat/jaw anymore ) that would help, but I think the conditioning would probably help me heal faster and step back on the mat with more confidence, so I would have to agree with you on that.

Ronin,
when you roll with bigger guys, you tend to make that guard work . I'm one of the smaller (well, more like weaker) guys, so mmy guard used to be about desparation, and holding on, but now I can transition to open and closed guards to prevent them from taking a better position, or like I said, to take that armbar. The only problem is that unlike sccr06, I don't think too much, I just whip that leg over, but sometimes I bust my partner in the head with my knee, or I hammer the back of my leg into his nose. I'm like that jerk you guys don't like cause I have no control when applying a submission and just end up throwing the knees and elbows. I don't do it on purpose, though. I'm just very sloppy when it comes to anything that doesn't have to do with kicking.

I need to work on my guard. I thought my guard was pretty tight until I started working with a couple of purple belts. I need to work on rolling out while a guy is passing. Also, I would like to make my submissions from the guard a bit snappier, my armbar is good, but I need to work on my collar chokes.

Cool

I need to work on finishing from the guard. My sweeps are decent, both closed and open guard but like WIAG, my finishes need to be snappier.

My shoots are ok but my takedowns in the clinch suck. I am suseptible to total annilihation when someone has me in the muay thai plum.

My ground game is practicaly non existent. I know the basic passes from all positions and I might be able to get lucky once in awhile and pull a submission out of my ass but thats it. So I have made a promise with myself to work on nothing but my ground game this year and see how far I progress.

I need to become better at defending against the stack. One killer combo that always gets me is when a guy is moving to the side of my open guard and is pushing my leg thru. After I throw my other leg over his head to stop the pass, I usually get stacked if the guy is good. If the guy has your belt and is keeping good pressure, it's hard to swim out.

Overall: Guard defense, armbars from mount/sidemount, pressure from sidemount and pressure from knee on stomach.

I am really happy with everything except for my striking. I rarely get to practice it, and when I do I realize it is my weakness. I am 99% pure grappler, I would be much more confident if I had some striking, both throwing and defenses. Aside from not having acess to good places to train striking I have good takedowns so I never really worried about standup until lately.
