competition equals rules, rules equal sparring...its agressive sparring, but its still a rule bound sport so its still sparring.

I'm not trying to argue, but thats the viewpoint I have and most of my students naturally agree...hey its our opinion...your certainly entitled to your own

Thumbs down

man seeing this video was pretty disturbing. i mean, i love training and i know getting injured is a risk but getting your back folded in half is fucking insane. im surprised that guy was still alive and able to scream in agony.

**** man, i only train with partners who care for my safety as much as theirs; seeing this video only enforces my wish to train with trusted partners. not long ago i decided to roll with a new guy who knew some wrestling who right off the bat put me in a can opener with all the strength he had. luckily i got out of it, though my neck was pretty damn sore the next day. i mean, wtf? was he really trying to break my neck? it could have happened. some people are dumb as hell. god did not bless them with intelligence and common sense, and these are the people we need to protect ourselves from. **** that shit, dumb fucks and people with big egos are the biggest hazard in martial arts. its common sense not to complete techniques that will permanently injure or kill your opponenet, but due to the large egos out there people will do anything to win, anything to look like a badass.

this shit happens in muay thai and boxing alot too, you try to work with someone instead of beat them to the ground and they in return respond with full force and you get injured. or someone you are sparring gets angry and really tries to injure you. some people out there will do anything to feel like a badass and lots of good people get injured all the time. some fagg0t tried to kick in my knee joint when we were sparring, and one guy once hit me as hard as he possibly could right at the begining when we were supposed to be lightly sparring and almost broke my nose. i kicked the shit out of him afterwards and he couldnt continue.

just earlier at training i was watching my class do drills, and even though my instructor clearly said we are to drill at 50% percent, after a few minutes everyone was going full force. many even used pure strength to force others into positions and techniques.

this video clip should also be a lesson to danfagella as well. this can happen to you or one of your buddies in one of your backyard wrestling matches you have with random people. you dont want some dude breaking your back in his attempts at inflating his own ego now do you?

Competition equals rules, thats right, rules dont equal sparring though.

Sparring = Practice

Competition = Trying to win (within the confine of the rules).

I know thats your whole point but look at it like this.

If your playing football, at practice, you play within the rules to get better, you do it full speed, you tackle the guys full speed, etc.

When its the game time, you do the same thing.

Are they the same though?

Sparring is "football practice"

Competition is "gameday"

do you do ANYTHING it takes to win? Are you willing to sacrifice the life of your opponent simply to win? Would you cripple someone on purpose in a football game or sparring? NO. When you are responsible for your actions and your opponents welfare you are competing under gentlemans rules...IE a friendly spar...dont you have things you wouldnt do in competition that you would certainly do in an fight where death was the potential outcome?

Anyone who voluntarily enters a martial arts competition where rules are present is sparring...it isnt the same thing you would do if your life was on the line...its a simulation within the rules of the event, the rules make it safe as possible as opposed to dangerous as possible. So its a friendly contest to see who is the best in that situation under those rules in that environment..... sparring

Thanks for the concern, emptyness, I know what you mean.

However, when we roll outsude (which does still occur, maybe once a week) it is usually the same group of guys, and technique is always the emphasis. Whenever someone is grimmacing to do a technique we make sure to tell them to chill out. When new people do come we always know thier background and let them know that its about learning and that it doesnt matter who wins. Guys to get dirty and act like meathead jackasses don't end up coming back.

My coach's rule when I played highschool football ws pratice like it's a game.

When game time comes the adrenaline and endorphines kick in and since you practiced like it was the game now your edge up on the guys who didn't take practice seriously.

But that vid was still some f***ed up stuff.
