First, where I train BJJ we aren't allowed to use leg locks. I believe this is very limiting and can be dangerous if I face someone who is. Living in Milwaukee there aren't any other real places I can train BJJ but wish to develop grappling leg attacks and defense. Would anyone have suggestions for quality DVDs that show the techniques in detail along with escapes?

Alot of schools wont teach white belts, or even blue belts leg locks, as they can be more debilitating than a messed up armbar (your messing with knees here), and white belts tend to be overzelous (spaz's) or they just do not have the knowledge of what they are actually doing, they dont have the complete control of the limb a purple or brown belt does. Your school may start to teach that at higher skill levels, because if they didnt they would be limiting themselves options in all of grappling, and giving themselves a disadvantage in competitions. In general though, leg locks are kinda risky as you give up position if it doesnt work, and some people overuse them and never really learn to pass the gaurd properly.

https://www.groundfighter.com/details/prodid/130.html - A six-volume set focusing on leg-locks.
Be VERY careful with leg locks, especially heel hooks. Tap early - when you're dealing with the knee, by the time you feel pain, you've already caused some damage.

I love leg locks, but heel hooks scare the sh*t out of me, my knees are too old to take that kind of abuse. If someone tries one on me, I'd recommend spinning like an idiot, & doing a bongo solo if he's still holding it when you stop
.Why not ask if you can learn the straight achilles lock? It's a lot safer than any of the twisting locks, and is a good place to start. For that reason, it's legal in the lower belts of most tournaments. Sapateiro is portugese for 'cobbler' - my instructor gave me the handle because I spend a lot of time staring at my opponents feet

Leg locks are leg locks are leg locks...They all work on the same principles of torque and leverage. They are often reserved for higher ranked players because of the tendency for destruction. Nothing like surgery and months of painful rehabilitation to fix a few seconds (or moments) of torque. I'd concentrate more on building a good solid game based on fundamentals and not worry so much about leg locks. I don't think that not having a vast arsenal of leg locks will hurt you one bit. You should train them some however. I'd agree with the Eric Paulson statement. I think that he's probably made the most systematic approach to leg locks of anyone around. I think Vunak talked at some point though about developing a leg lock game against the guard. I haven't seen any of it though.
