Default What is traditional Judo

Hey guys,

Can anybody tell me what traditional judo is? I did a search and found that there is sport judo and traditional judo and that traditional has a more martial artsy type value, philosophically speaking. Does anybody know if that means that their goal isn't to get ippon? How much ground work is in traditional? Thanks. And one other thing, why the heck do judo guys always have bad shoulders?

Traditional Judo spawned from a synthesis of various styles of Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Jigoru Kano designed it, and proved it's worth when his style defeated all comers at a Jiu Jitsu competition.

But the sporting aspect gradually took over. From a self defence system, involving all kinds of strikes, neck cranks etc., it was slowly changed to a sport where the combatants could "fight" each other without the risk of serious injury.

So the killing moves of yesterday were replaced with the "ippon" (symbolic kill) of today.

It's still pretty mean though, as the participants fight full throttle against resisting opponents.

I agree with Thai Bri. Another change is that Judo has become less about the groundwork, and more about the big throws. I think this has come about as the rules have changed to make the sport more 'spectator friendly', especially for the Olympics.

Indeed. I still beleive sport Judo has tremendous Martial Art applications, and the sportive combat allows the guys to throw/grapple without killing one another.

"Traditional" Judo will include Kata or forms whch will teach basic weapons attacks and defences along with fundamental atemiwaza (punching and kicking) in addition to throwing, grappling, limb destructions (locks) and strangling techniques.

Many Judo guys are surprised to find swords and guns in Judo.
