Default question on tyson, and fighting

not sure if this has been posted before, but how do you guys think tyson would have done in UFC, if he had gone into it in his prime (ie around the time he become heavyweight champion in boxing). And for mma fighters out there, how would you fight a guy who is very fast and strong with his hands (use more kicks or try to pull him down for grappling right away?).

dude are you kidding? tyson wouldnt fight Rickson Gracie back then and if he did fight a BJJ guy (who OWNED MMA in that day, including vale tudo) Tyson would get taken down (though he had a 1/10940843943 chance of landing a KO punch when the guy shot in), and then submitted in less than a minute or 2. Probably look alot like Hughes -Gracie. Tyson had no chance, none of winning. If in 1987 Tyson took some BJJ, then in 1996 he would have gotten a black belt (after prison) and mixed up his game with some mauy thai, youd have the baddest fighter ever

One of the top 20 boxers ever(in his prime) wouldnt have had a chance... are you outa your mind... I think he would have beaten Royce, there was no striker even relatively close to being relatively close to his caliber in the early UCF, actually, there really havent been any, even today. That's an ignorant, close minded statment, you have no previous example to qualify your statment.

Eh...he's a HEAVYWEIGHT though...meaning he'd have monstrous firepower to blast THROUGH Royce.

Can't say the same thing if he went up against other monster heavyweights though...Fedor, Crocop, Randleman, Arlovski, etc.

Default it is obvois none of you have ever boxed

what a stupid statement, you do realize mike tyson broke mitch greens jaw with an open hand, i'm sure there will be some stupid reply.

ufc 1 paid $50,000 Tyson made no less than 20 times that from his 15th fight on
that is why. Get a grip, I love hearing people who have never stepped into a ring making fools of themselves if tyson hit you in his prime you wouldn't take him down you would be having your jaw wired, not planning a submission get a grip

Why do people think Martial arts are so superior to boxing, Boxers are usally faster, stronger and train more.

I won the Pittsburgh Golden Gloves in 1997 we trained 6 days a week 3 hours a day, for the Golden Gloves, the pro guys where in our gym before I got there and after I left every day! I wish some of you guys would actually step in a ring, but then again everytime anyone posts anything about actually fighting someone comes up with the stupidest "Mystical art crap" give me a break. Tyson was a master, messed up yes but anyone with his speed who can break a mans face with an open hand, and can win 32 straight fights at 21 years of age is a force to be recond with.

Default who are real fighters

What fighter in the top even 20, in any major boxing Org. has ever fought in the early ufc bouts? that joke with one glove? this is so crazy, have you ever watched boxing? I love the Ufc more now than ever because since Dana White took over the fighters are actually getting paid, and guess what look at the difference in athlete now compared to then.

I respect BJJ, but lets face it the caliber of fighter now vs then is not comparable. Look at Tysons physical power, yes power does matter contrary to all the eastern mystisisim and kung fu movies you may have seen. if power didn't matter then boxers wouldn't work so hard doing what they do they would just learn the crazy non physical moves and make thier millions that way.

Who is a real fighter, Micheal Spinks, Pinklon Thomas, Evander Holyfield, they don't compare with who that Gracie has fought, look at the difference dude. Dan sSevran was tough, but man he was 50 years old! People said stuff about Tyson when he lost to Buster Douglas who was 34! Tyson fought and beat everyone in his prime, He was fast and strong! He hit harder than anyone that is why he made at least 1.5 million per fight not $50,000

My friend you are clueless, who were these fighters! I have never heard of anyone ranked in any major org. fighting in any MMA events, the guys in the early ufcs were stiffs.

In fact even the ufc pads the truth a bit, that guy who fought in ufc 60 was not ranked currently in the IBF he had been ranked 4 years ago # 17 in the super middleweight (156 lbs) now fighting at 225 big difference.

who are these guys? The onslaught of new talent shows that BJJ is not the part and parcel look at matt Hughes, Chuck Lidell, Forest Griffin just to name a few,

you have never been hit by some one who can punch! Mike Tyson broke Mitch Greens jaw with an open hand, a slap (by the way he was ranked 6th in the world at the time so get a grip.

I don't think many realize how powerful and how quick Tyson was in his prime. The shoot he would have to fear but if he learned how to sprawl, he would have been absolutely devistating. As good as some of the MMA fighters are, none come at all close to the power he packed.

Oh and if you watch Tyson's fights trying to go into a clinch, one is walking right into his hook or uppercut. And do you really think Tyson, as dumb as he is, would train for an MMA like it was nothing more then boxing? He would learn to sprawl and how to survive the clinch. I've never seen a boxer that packed as much power as Tyson in his prime.

Well, He'd most certainly dominate them on the feet... going to the ground wouldn't be an option... he'd lose horribly.

Homo... there were no pure boxers... only karate champs and kenpo guys and stuff. Any boxers who did join were of little caliber. Think about it... a pro will dominate a normal boxer who may have been training multiple times a week for years... you didnt even have the first type of boxer that i just described in the early UFC... and a pro... even one not that good, will make the amateur look stupid... Think about it.... the level is jsut too great... you obviously never boxed... but you're an idiot anyway so it doesnt matter.

THANK YOU!! A sensible post at last! lol. I've seen more powerful boxers... but none as skilled with his power. Foreman was more powerful... and was decent... but not skilled necessarily.

What I mean by this is Tyson hit extremely hard, but what made his knockouts seem more devestating was: A. head movement/footwork... which amounts to him being able to set up angles through which to gain a more advantageous position to punch and not get punched, and also with the head movement, he couldnt be hit at all... if you watched him he was rediculous. B. Power... He was strong as an ox, and was an infigher, which just amplified the power, and the perception of his power. C. Jaw/toughness... Make no mistake, in his prime he could take a hit, watch any of his fights where he actually did get hit, he had a good jaw. D. Timing, watch the Quick Tillis fight, how he masterfully dodged his punches and moved outa the way, especially on the knockdown... it was an amazing dodge-counter. Tillis was a former #2 ranked contender who fought for the title when he fought tyson, and he was trying to use tyson as a stepping stone to get back to the top ranks, and was by no means a chump.
