Hey,whats up, if my memory serves me correct your a BB in judo right... so I hope you may be able to help me out. Can you tell me how kansetsu-waza can be applied in MMA. What are the techniques that WORK and, in your opinion do you think going straight into a wristlock after a throw is any good. Thanks!

PassiveGuy, Whoa!
I am NOT a black belt in judo! I don't know where you got that, and I'm humbly flattered of course, but definately shouldn't take credit I don't deserve. Nope I'm not a blackbelt yet, but am now once again training in judo, and have some prior experience. So I'll give it my best shot.
Kansetsu waza for MMA? Well take a look at the Gracie's when they fight, and any of the MMA fighters in the ring today. All use armlocking techniques in their fights with great success. Remember Sak breaking Renzo's arm??
In my honest opinion, the simple locks work the best if you can find as many possible ways of getting into the same move. I personally like jujigarame and ude garame (straight armlock, and kimura lock). I feel that these offer a very realistic, no-nonsense approach, and are much safer to pull off against a higher ranked man than say something like a flying armbar, or anything too fancy. The beauty with locks is that you can put them on from a variety of positions. Especially if the man is trying to escape your pin. As he is getting out, go for a lock while he's focused on just escaping your pin.
As far as going directly into a wrist lock from a throw... well sure if it works do it. I would say that a better bet would be to go directly into a pin or straight armlock, but it depends on the situation. And how well you can do the wrist lock.

Even though I won't really be posting much on the other topics of this board, if anyone wants to ask questions like this, I'd be more than happy to try and offer my advice.
Judo Guy is a BB, and would be MUCH more knowedgable than I am in this kind of thing. I definately would recommend speaking with him. Though he doesn't post much either.

Take care,
Ryu

Thanks for the advice! I thought you were a Blackbelt because you said something about doing katas, which I think are practiced mainly by advanced ranks, of coarse I guess you do them for the spiritual and solo-practice aspects. Also someone in the chatroom a few weeks ago said you were a BB in TKD and judo...

thanks

Question

Really??
Hmmm that's kinda weird. I don't remember saying anything about katas... If you mean the karate-type, I never touch the stuff really I do meditate for the spiritual aspect of MA though. Um I went through the belt ranks in TKD when I was a kid, but I don't even consider it a big thing, because quite frankly, it was a McDojo.

I never go to chat, so if there is a guy saying he's me, it's not
Just so there's not anymore confusion here is my background.
Two years training in Gracie and Machado jiu-jitsu (white belt level )
Wrestling experience in high school
Judo experience
Phase one instructor from Paul Vunak in JKD concepts. (However the certificate is probably no longer active since I haven't trained with Paul in a while.)

That's it. Hope that clears some stuff up.

Take care,
Ryu
