I was watching a video of Joe Rogan the other day, he applied a choke and literally about 2/3 seconds into the choke the bloke colapsed and was out...
What's the deal with that? Is there a special technique or are some people just more subseptable then others? |

How deep you've got the choke "sunk". How much pressure you are applying, squeezing with the arms, deeply breathing in (expanding the chest making it tighter), pushing into their head with your head, etc... There is also what they are doing, if there neck is all tensed up (which it will be for 99% of people as someone is choking the life out of them) they will go out faster, than if you relax.

Also, and I hate to throw out the "myth" here, but it's been documented Rickson Gracie's, use of yoga, and extreme relaxtion to avoid being submitted. If you are completely relaxed.. as he tries to be... it gives you more time to work escapes and that. This didnt come easy though, hours upon hours, upon hours of training he devoted to this, its the same thing with his arms, armbars on him can be stretched a little farther because he relaxes everything. You say "thats just hearsay" look at Royce, his brother, look at his face when Hughes had bent his arm well past 180 degrees, calm as day, he was relaxed as shit with that armbar on.

A solid blood choke (as was taught to me at least :P) can put someone out in 8-12 seconds. An air choke, 1-3 minutes.

Regularly go to LA to train with Rorion & his sons, and Helio comes down once or twice a year, sometimes Royce too. My training partner James stayed there for 6 months and became an assistant instructor for Rorion. Spent 4 months training in Barra in Brazil & trained with Carlos Gracie Jr, along with Rolles jr., and world champs like Pe da Pano, Marcio Fetosa (also trained with him in LA), Largarto, Carlos Lemos etc. The GB combat team train there as well - Babalu etc. Trained at Roylers in Rio too, he's a really nice guy.
Now training in Bristol, UK at Gracie Barra under Carlos Lemos Jr. I love this sport http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...enerrorion.jpg http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...iro/Royler.jpg http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...racieJames.jpg http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...eiro/Royce.jpg If you're asking how Helio managed to get an 'immediate choke', I'm not sure. Perhaps the impact against the neck caused a shock that caused unconsciousness in the same way a strike does to the chin? I know there are meant to be pressure point knockout strikes in some of the traditional arts, although I've always been sceptical of how practical they are.
