Hi, i am part of the sikh religion, the youngest major religion in the world. It was originated about 500 years ago. The sikhs have 10 gurus, teachers who taught the ways of life. The sixth guru was the first to engage in warfare. He created the defence art of Gatka. Every sikh was to abide in this art to defend the religion and others against injustice.
Today Gatka still runs in the sikh community....in Vancouver Bc we have a Gatka team and i thought that you guys should check it out, a mixtape of our team was made recently and you can watch it by clicking the following http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...481787&q=gatka In the start of the video, as demonstrated is the footwork to prepare you to start doing gatka...it isnt a kind of dance or anything it is a way we pay our respects to the weapons, Many weapons are used, sticks, staffs, swords axes, knives, many more This is a freestyle martial art, basically anything goes....it is a type of martial art that lets you move alot, it is this way because in the battles, the sikhs were outnumbered so they had to move to many locations...post your thoughts i have more videos if you want, you can ask me to postt. This art was designed to take on multiple opponents. thankss Feel free to ask any questions, and if requested i can post up more videos |

In battles, those were made of metal chains with speares on the ends, they were lined up in front so if the enemy had shot an arrow it wouldnt get past the walls of the net (chakar), it was also used to protect soldiers, they would be behind it so that the enemy wouldnt be able to attack

Ahb kese ho, Khalistan.
From my understanding, Sikh is a religion. Hindus note that Sikhs are some of India's best athletes and are also big in the personal protection business. This is a reputation they have throughout asia; Sikhs have worked as body guards as far east as Hong Kong. I've also been told that every Sikh male carries a blade or two hidden in his turbin or wrapped under his shorts. Is this a religious conviction or a cultural practice?? The video was pretty interesting. How does Gathka compare to other Indian arts, like kalari payathu?

Yeah, baptized sikhs have a kirpan, a dagger with a stap going from the shoulder down to the waist and the kirpan is there, Here in Surrey BC canada, the economy is run by sikhs....my whole neighbor hood is sikhs, its like a little punjab in canada...its very multicultural
Another thing to the video is that that was choregoraphy and actual fighting mixed together. i can post up videos of actual sparring as well, without the music, also the part that looks like dancing isnt actually dancing, its a way to get your footwork ready for playing, to get yourself warmed up.... |
