As you know I don't come out of hiding much but to post something that's really pissed me off. I don't have the time. But today we've got a problem.
I've been attending amature mma fights around the blomington area taking a peek at a guy my friend Ryan is going to have to fight in his first mma bout. all around me there are ppl my age and younger decked out in "tapout" gear. tons of them, in packs. Trying to pull off a "i'm a really cool-badass mma guy because i'm wearing something that says 'tapout' on it" look. Spare me. That's like touting Emo gear or going goth in highschool to get attention. i remember when skateboarding was an act of rebelion not of conformity. I remember when the UFC was being banned from various states. I remember when ppl laughed at me when i said i wasn't going out to party because UFC 20 was on PPV and my brother was buying it for me. Let's not let our passion become pop culture. Don't paint your face and grow an affro in a vain attempt to look like someone from the tapout crew. Don't walk around with your cool new beanie you just bought offline and say "yeah, i've loved mma forever man!" .....no, no you haven't. you were beating off to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on Spike TV all afternoon, then you accidently left it on while you were cleaning yourself off and Fight Night Live came on... so you got online bought some shit from inyaface and now you claim to be a lifetime mma fan. stop, think, admit your being gay, cope with it, and move on. Peace, Dan

If I saw somebody dressed like a goth, who had an afro, who was also touting eskimo gear...I'd have to look at it and say, "Damn...the's pretty COOL"... and/or "Badass!" |

Yeah even in Canada, a Goth with an Afro sporting the Eskimo gear is out of the norm...
Haha.... Seriously I know what you mean about the tapout gear though, the guys who come decked out in it to the MMA gym, then pull guillotine choke after guillotine choke in a vague attempt to "win". I'm there to roll and learn, not get some douchebag trying to rip my head off. Or you get these guys who cant finish the class warmup for No-Gi Jiu Jitsu. When the instructor mentions that the No-Gi guys should come out to the Gi Classes because it makes you a more technical grappler, and almost all of the top MMA fighters, and 99% of all the top grapplers in the world have trained with the Gi at one point or another (Fedor, Nogueira, etc..) And then the kid who cant finish the warmup, is wearing all tapout, and has some fancy different colour haircut too look badass says... "Yeah well I'm really doing No-Gi Jiu Jitsu to supplement my MMA game" (and therefore doesnt need to do the Gi classes) It just pisses you right off. That was the guys second class, had he taken a kickboxing or boxing, or muay thai, or FMA, or wrestling, or karate or TKD class before, no. But he only needed No-Gi for his MMA game. Its your 2nd class WHAT KIND OF MMA GAME DO YOU HAVE! Sorry went off on a little rant... I for one will never buy a piece of Tapout clothing, because 1. I hate the people you described. 2. It's overpriced. 3. The guys who sell it are a big bunch of douches... "we got the fights, and the women, and the drinking, and the women, and the crack smoking (not sure if that ones in) and the women, and the partying, OH YEAH DID WE MENTION THE WOMEN" there a bunch of fucking douchebags, all of them, those women dont like you, they like your money, AAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHH I HATE TAPOUT. Man at one point in this thread there was supposed to be a "but" and I start to disagree with you, but now that I think about it, I probably hate it more than you do.

okay...cross this
http://www.vskrems-lerchenfeld.ac.at...der/eskimo.jpg with this http://www.funandsmile.de/images/pro...uecke_big.jpeg and a tinge of this http://bob.bob.bofh.org/~giolla/goth.../sml-goth1.jpg and you end up with the oddest creature on the face of the earth... like a platapus... I think I shall dub it, the afor-eski-goth-ipus. There we go; genus; gothus pussius species;afro eski pus-a-fillis. |

Yeah I've been doing bjj on and off since 2000, back when MMA was usually called vale tudo. The only piece of regular clothing that I have that may identify me as a bjj'er is a Red Nose shirt I bought off the atama website years ago when they actually sold red nose gear there.
I also find the whole TapOut poser thing a bit annoying. I can honestly say that I have never seen anyone who I've actually trained with (in multiple schools and informal training sessions at my college) wearing any TapOut clothing. Money wasted on expensive TapOut gear could go towards private lessons, monthy bjj tuition, gatorade powder mix, or many other things. I guess TapOut gear is easy to afford for those who actually don't spend any money on training. It's kind of funny, this last Christmas my little brother who is 16 asked for and received a full-contact fighter hooded sweatshirt. Granted FCF is not anywhere near as obnoxious as the TapOut people, but my little brother plays tennis and baseball. I asked him if he wants to start wrestling this year but he wants to spend as much time practicing tennis as possible during the winter. Well I guess that full-contact fighter sweatshirt will look pretty cool while he is hitting those little balls across the court.

well, mma has gained mainstream popularity, so of course we are going to see more and more people wearing tapout gear and shirts and hats that say shit like " Full Contact Fighter" on them. shit, even carson daily was wearing a full contact fighter hat, and we all know that dude doesnt do jack shit. but hey thats how it goes.
you ever notice how people who are truly tough dont ever say shit about being tough or dont feel the need to act tough or talk about how hard they train? they dont ever feel the need to have to prove themselves cause the truly know whats up. they arent like all the other people you see at the mall that are just "flexing". the dont need to wear a tight shirt to show off their muscles and walk with their head up high. in fact, ive noticed that the toughest people ive ever met werent even concerned about looking or being tough, they were concerned with more imporant things like their families and friends, and living decent lives. i hang out with alot of martial artists and i tell you there are two types. there are the ones who when you go out to a party or bar with, all they do the entire time is talk about training and being a badass so they can impress/intimidate others. and then you got the guys who dont ever say shit about training. and the difference between the two is very great......... |
