Default Respect?

Here's what happened. I went to a gym that offers instruction in MT, boxing, and jiu jitsu, not suprisingly. I talked to the gym manager and he was rude and disrespectful. I told him that in addition to MT and Judo, I had practiced aikido and JKD. He said about aikido and JKD, "you're aware that those are not effective forms of self defense, right? If you want to learn what really works, then this is the place." Then he went on to brag about how the instructors had one x number of fights and were champions of such and such. He was abrubt and rude and in kind of insulted me. Then later on I was thinking about it. JKD not effective? I beg to differ. I learned a lot of good self defense techniques, and not just the eye poking/gouging and groin kicks, but grappling and striking that are from MT and jiu jitsu. And isn't Bruce Lee considered a very important influence in the development of MMA? And what about aikido? I hear it's taught to Japanese police, and its derived from jiu jitsu!!! It's not useless. In a way the guy kind of insulted his own gym.

I don't want to make any generalizations but I have encountered several people like this who think that MMA (MT and BJJ or some variant) are the end all of martial arts. Theirs is the best. They have no respect for other disciplines. I've sparred with some of these guys in MT. I put my hands together and bow in the traditional Thai way, and they don't return the gesture. I've met a lot of these guys that have no discipline and no etiquette. What's the deal?

Because they dont bow there disrespectful, how bout after you beat the shit out of each other and you get the "good job for sticking it out" hug.

Just because your not bowing, and bowing, and thanking your sensei, and kissing the floor he walks on, doesnt mean it lacks etiquette.

Do I bow when I do Judo, I sure do.

Do I bow when I do other things, not a chance.

Could I do without bowing in Judo, sure could, do I care, nope.

I think that TKD is not a very effective style to learn for self-defense but I would never tell a kid that did TKD for 7 years that he wasted those years of his life.

I have love and respect for all martial arts and a true martial artist should. The respect is learned from traditional martial arts. These sporty fighting arts just teach you how to fight and that is all.

The place where I train at the instructor bashed not only TKD but said that Judo sucked as well. When I told him that there are some really good fighters in MMA that know Judo he told me that they know other arts as well and that is why they are good.

I am not a too much of a fan of Aikido but JKD is a extremely effective martial art to learn for self-defense.

At the end it does not matter what anyone thinks but what you yourself thinks. Also there is more to martial arts than just self-defense.

Why was that not surprising?

Yeah, 'cause then there would be two a-holes at the same gym.

The guy really does sound like a douche. I do see a lot of innefective training methods in aikido specifically, but training in aikido and JKD has many merits, and is more self-defence oriented, though it may be less sparring oriented, which MMA guys prefer, and works best for ring training.

If hes right, then all arts suck and everyone should mix it up. Karo Parisian is a great MMA fighter, and his base is Judo. Sure, he knows other arts as well, but you have to nowadays. If you don't, then you'll get the shit kicked out of you by fighters like Matt Hughes. Royce mainly trains in BJJ, and hes one of the best at BJJ in the world, but he had nothing against a well-rounded fighter like Hughes. That goes for anyone who just trains in one art.

Tell your instructor that his art sucks, and that the only reason that there are some good fighters that use it are because...

Default Respect

Anyone who goes around disrespecting people, whether they're in martial arts or not, is just "cruisin' for a bruisin." I've seen it time and time again. Oh yeah, they'll get theirs. They think they are cool, but really they're only about half as cool as they think they are. Sometimes it takes awhile, though. It's called karma...
