never heard of it? where in san diego? lots of places to train down here, fabio santos', marcelo pereiras, dean lister's, shamrock's, diego sanchez's is down here too sometimes. roy harris I dont know, he might be part of a bigger school that cross trains. city boxing maybe?

nah he has his own academy, he's a jkd guy and sounds pretty good, never seen his bjj program but i know he's pretty good with weapons.

Then again I've seen a video of his students on youtube but i forgot what my impression was. Might want to search it.

Roy Harris has a well-deserved reputation for being a very good instructor - his teaching method is very detailed, very scientific. Check out his writing and video clips on his website http://royharris.com . Also on bjj.org http://bjj.org/articles/ .

Reading Roy Harris' stuff really helped me with the mental organization of my own training as far as setting goals and focusing on the details is concerned. If you have the opportunity to train at his academy go for it! I'm not sure if they accept new students year-round though. Check his website for details.

I've been training there since April after hearing numerous recommendations from others. Let me tell you, Mr. Harris knows his stuff. As another poster said, he has a pretty well established reputation in teh BJJ community. His teaching is very detailed and scientific. He's a 3rd degree black belt under Joe Moreira and he's also got a slew of instructional DVD's.

I cannot recommend the Harris academy enough. I strongly recommend anyone in the San Diego area to attend one of his classes sometime. You will be impressed!

thanks for the posts. i may be moving to san diego in the near future so ive started looking for place to train if i decide to move. roy harris' academy seems cool, i can learn fma there and still continue my bjj and mt.

I went down for a seminar with Roy and he's an excellent instructor. He's a tireles machine. The guy has so many things going on at one time, he's amazing he can do so much.
There used to be only Fabio Santos teaching in San Diego but in recent years, there's a whole list of GREAT schools to choose from in BJJ and No Gi Sport Grappling.
Besides training with Fabio Santos, I've also hit Rodrigo Medeiros' school in Pacific Beach, an awesome college town.

About 5-20 minutes in any direction, you can train at a great school in San Diego and the cities nearby...

If I lived down south, it would be a tough choice for me to choose a school to train at.

Yeah I just moved from San Diego not that long ago (man I miss the weather and the beach) and there is just great training everywhere in the SD area. Roy Harris as a solid BJJ program, Fabio Santos does too, and at Fabio's you will get alot of individual attention from a 6th degree Black Belt, well which is needless to say, priceless. Roy's program is a little more, open minded, with alot more options and a more Self-Defense oriented approach at his school in general. His BJJ instructors are solid all around and he builds a good curriculum for his beginner students to come in and start understanding the art.
