| Registered User | Do surfing board shorts work fine for grappling (recomendations fro ANY grappling shorts?)? Do surfing rash gaurds work well for grappling (recomendations fro ANY rash gaurds?)? Are there any T-shirts I can buy that will stand the test of time on the mat (many are stretched out now)? |

| Registered User | Thier rash gaurds are far more expensive than some surfing ones, this is why im comparing the grappling gear to surf gear, I want to get quality stuff, i want to get lower prices, and i also dont want all these lame "tough guy" clothing companies on my gear. I hate all these "Slayer" and "Kickass" and "Killer" names of cheesey MMA shit, its disgusting. ATAMA is an obvious exeption, I love Atame and may end up getting thier stuff. |

![]() | It's kind of funny, about 6 years ago I bought a pair of board shorts with a velcro fly and string ties at the top at JC Penny on sale for $10. The cheapo board short is still going strong and looks good. I've swam in 'em, grappled in 'em, ran in 'em. Only recently did I get a pair of Sprawl shorts because my old board shorts were a little too long for kicking movements. So yes, you can go out and buy cheap shorts and grapple in them, usually it's against the rules to grab shorts anyway (in MMA and no-gi grappling) so in actuality your shorts don't get as much punishment as something like a gi jacket. Also, if you want some cheap rash guards they have some imitation Under-Armour ones at Walmart that cost about $8. It's a good price but I still prefer Under-Armour.

![]() | I wear a surf rashie at training and it seems to work just fine. The only draw back is I also wear it surfing and the 'smell of the ocean' isn't always appreciated so I guess a second one is needed. I also hear that the surf rash vest is more durable but can't speak for this myself as mine has never worn out with both surfing and training. If you pick up a pair of surf board shorts there's generally two types. One are light and quick drying, most likely with only one low pocket, normally made from quite a light material, and second, more 'travel shorts', heavier material, more pockets and less quick drying. Oh, and never buy ones with elasticated waists ! Cheers. |
