    tennis elbow?

Hi all, I have question i was hoping someone can help me with. I have a shooting pain on the outer part of my elbow whenever i do a curl, a reverse curl, or use my arm in a motion similar to an arm wrestling motion. Most people I talk to seem to think this is tennis elbow, but nobody knows how to releive the pain. I last trained in bjj over a year ago and i wanted to get back, but with this pain i am feeling in my dominant elbow I dont think i could grab people and hold them. Unfortunately in bjj i mostly relied on power because I am not fast or agile. I dont think I will ever be quick and fast and to be honest my technique kinda sucked, but i was able to get by in class by overpowering alot of the smaller guys. Now that I have this pain in my elbow I cant even do a 25lb curl without feeling alot of pain. I dont have insurance and I dont really like going to the doctors so I am open to your suggestions on how to cure this pain. I was thinking of doing high reps low weight curls but dont know if this will make it worse.

See a Doctor, you might have a serious injury. Something like that you should get checked out. I have seen guys let something like that go and it only makes it take longer to recover, get in to the Dr. get it checked, get it fixed, get back to training... Good luck and I hope it is nothing serious...

several years ago, we were doing arm bar drills and my training partner was cranking the arm bars just a little bit too much and after a few days, my elbow was really sore.
At the time, I was seeing an accupuncturist doctor for back spasms and told her of my elbow pain. She pushed on the top part of my arm at the crease, opposite of the point of the elbow and I almost jumped off the chair from the sharp pain.
She said I had "Tennis Elbow".
She put three needles on the side of my knee and the pain went away after a hald hour and never came back....

    Acccupuncture really works for me.

go to a doctor and get your problem diagnosed.
it might be something different or worse.

My fear is when a doctor might tell me "If only you came in sooner..."
So I go for annual checkups and recently have been going in quarterly to get my blood checked since the thyroid levels are just a tad low and I'm on some meds to bring them up which they are now.

Let me guess, you taking Synthroid and/or Klor-Con? Dude...that sucks! Watch your electrolytes too, man...if you ever get all clamy and your hands spasm and lock up, call the ambulance...that shit is scary!

They'll put that on your head stone as famous last words.

While true, the mind has awesome powers, westurn culture has a few shortcommings in that perspective.

To majorfufu, go see the doctor! The pain is telling you, something is wrong. If you wait any longer, you might do some permanent damage!

You might do some research on a medical site.

I have the same problem, except sometimes my elbow hurts and sometimes it doesnt. I went to the doc and he said it was tennis elbow. Now I always wear a elbow brace when I workout or grapple, it has helped me a lot. You should try to get it checked out if possible. Is it a constant pain or only when you workout? If its not constant and only hurts sometimes then its probably tennis elbow, get a good brace and some ibuprofen.

I suffer quite badly from 'golfers elbow' which is an inflamation of the inner elbow. In cases like this the inflamation is caused by a muscle imbalance, your antagonist or protagonist muscles are either too weak or too tight.

I would imagine that treatment for 'tennis elbow' would be similar. There is a variety of stretch's you can do, on a daily basis, that will rebalance or loosen the muscles up. Also try some of the 'thera-band' exercises.

Best bet is to just google the injury and pick the best advice. Normally though you're in for the long haul. The injury has built up over a long period of time and will take a fair amount of effort and time to rebalance the muscles.

I'd also suggest, in my humble opinion, that when you roll in BJJ try to adopt a more relaxed and technical approach.

You could also try glucosamine sulphate stacked with chondrotin.

    Good luck.

Don't do any curls man. That will just tighten you up and prolong the pain.

At this point, you probably need an injection of an anti-inflamatory.

But if you won't go to a dr., At least do the RICE routine. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Get a tennis elbow wrap at Walgreens for the compression. You have to wrap the elbow a little above and a little below the joint to support the tendons enough to relieve them. If you can take ibuprophen ok, do about 800 to 1000 mg per day for just a few days.

After the inflamation subsides, you can start some slow - gentel - stretches; but, back off as soon as you feel any pain. This is a slow recovery process.

    Good luck.
