I've been getting more and more into youtube (thanks to Garland's many posted links) and as I was looking at this Sanshou video I realized I really don't know much about sanshou (rules, history, etc.). I was particularly interested in the fact that after a throw or takedown apparently you just walk away and let the opponent stand up again, instead of pouncing on them for groundwork. I've always been impressed by Cung Le's ability with throws and takedowns, but now I'm wondering if that is a specific emphasis of the style rather than just Cung Le's forte.

Sanda/San Shou is a Chinese modification of Muay Thai...they essentially took Muay Thai and added some throws and takedowns...but no groundwork, and little emphasis on the smaller, finite details that make Muay Thai so freakin' sweet.
If Cung Le were so fucking good...he would be competing in K-1 Max...or the king's birthday. The top level, elite kickboxers of the world can move from one top level event with different rules, to another. K-1 means no elbows and a lesser clinche time, no throws...fights in thailand allow everything but plowing (sometimes), headbutts, and throws. Cung Le would be murdered by somebody like Buakaw or Masato, or One Songchai, not to mention other A-list monsters. |
