I've only seen Karo Parisyan pull this off on UFC and was wondering what some key points to pulling off this move are. Do you try to get your hips in front and under him like in o-goshi? Or do you try to get them past him like a hip lob? etc.
The only things I noticed is that he uses the wizzer and wrist control to set up the move and then just launch his opponent from there.

I think you try to get one leg inbetween his legs and hook his outside leg. With no gi you need to have an underhook or two. I think when your leg through between his, his leg closest to you is off the ground and thats where he loses balance and you can flip him. BUt your hips have to be in front of his waist far as i know else you cant get the leverage

Hmmm I think you might be thinking of the Uchi-Mata, that's where you haveyour leg inbetween his and you're reaping the near leg. In harai-goshi you're reaping the far leg. But yeah I've been thinking the same thing, your hips would most likely have to be in front of him in order for there to be enough leverage to flip him.

Harai goshi is is similar to tai otoshi in many ways, except that the throw is achieved using both leg sweeping & torso twisting as opposed to just torso twisting. Traditionally, I used to used to grip behind the head, but have now switched the grip to under the armpit to avoid exposing the back. I think (?) that this hand can push the opposite shoulder blade slightly to help the throw.
This is a little weird but I have some old video of learning harai goshi, and after drilling it for a while the movement became much more efficient. At this stage there was the sound of the opponents foot skimming the mat as it was swept backwards. When the throw was smooth & effortless, we heard that sound every time. Strange. |

A Harai Goshi is where you sweep their outer leg with your inner leg while doing a Hip throw, or O Goshi. Ive never done one(harai goshi) but i imagine that you use the same principles of a hip throw like, getting the over-under tie up(your left arm overhooks his right for example), circling your guy so that he steps with his outer leg(right leg), dropping your hips, keeping your feet together and your shoulders almost squared up to his, and excecuting the throw, except as you lift up, block his right leg with your right. So for a second you should be on one leg as you continue to lift up. If thats another throw and not a H-Goshi, then maybe you hook your right foot around opponent's right ankle as you complete the hip throw?

So just let me know why you gave him advice, I'm asking a genuine question, and am genuinely interested.

i did judo for a while and i can say that its alot more difficult to throw someone with judo techniques when there not waring a gi, obviously. i honestly can say that you should go with the wrestling hip throw. its really effective if you can do it right. what i used to do is tie up, or clinch, you pummel in, then when you just about have the over under hook you use your shoulder to straighten them pushing your momentum forward then throw your hip out side his body making a T with your feet. if you can do it all in one motion it works really well. theres really no need to reap because your upper body and your hips are working together. its more practical than tugging on a gi and having hand position be so important. im not bashing judo, i think it has alot of techniques that are very usefull but wrestling is my grappling background so i find it the best for take downs and throws.

Why comment if you've never done it? I'm seriously interested into why you did this, alot of people do it, I'm just wondering why.

Dont you see how spreading mis-information could be harmful though, I'm not about to go and give advice on how to operate fire arms in a SD situation, or simply operate fire arms, cause someone could get hurt out of it....
I dont know... if you dont know first hand, or from your experience, or have facts (like a kodokan book or something agreeing with you), than you dont know if its the truth. And if you dont know its the truth, it could get someone hurt.

I've tried the Harai Goshi (no-gi) using a whizzer as control and with head and arm control as well. Results? No dice. Guess this move really isn't for me. I've had a lot of success with the Osoto-Gari so I guess I'll just keep working that. Just wanted to add an actualy throw to my arsenal besides the Ippon Seoio Nage. Any other suggestions for effective no-gi judo throws?
