Mario Sperry vs Royler

It does seem to be a downward step in the heirarchy of positions.

Perhaps Royler was offering the back (not giving it) as a dummy as part of a setup/combination, or he was going to immediately close down one side to stop the hook from coming in, or perhaps he simply felt that his defence from the back was better than from under Mario's sidemount?

It's difficult to say what he was doing, after all those guys are always thinking two or three moves ahead, and have a much larger repertiore of techniques than yours truly...

Weight matters...you reverse their weights and I'm sure the opposite would have happened. Royler said later that the last time he tried to escape that he didn't protect his neck, that was his undoing, he screwed up. He would have gotten tapped eventually anyway, screw up or not.

If you want to see a fine example of Mario having trouble with a skinny Japanese guy who weighs about 20 lbs. less than him, check out his fight with Yuki Kondo. Mario tries so hard for the takedown, he's running around the ring holding Kondo's ankle, Kondo just hops around on one foot for a while, and then eventually beats the crap out of Mario.
