Has anyone ever seen a good striker with short reach? I ask because all the fighters that tend to throw hands have usually have super long reaches.

Rocky Marciano. I believe he weighed 180-something and was typically shorter than most of his opponents in the heavy weight division.

Smokin' Joe Frasier.

Stocky, short-reach fighter who beat Ali during their first bout. Frasier won by a unanimous decision.

Frasier was 5'11" and weighed 197 during much of his pro-career but bulked up to 220 during the later part.

I'd be curious if anybody has noticed any MMA fighters out there who "strike" well with shorter reach...

I'm simply saying this b/c eating a bareknuckle or MMA gloved shot while getting inside is much less appealing than the same with full sized boxing gloves.

striking is a lot about timing. mike tyson said it himself, you can be 5'6 and jab a guy who is 6'2 if you have good timing.

Duane "Bang" Ludwig is a short-reach muay thai fighter with a decent punch, nothing spectacular though.

Actually I have met some vale tudo competitors who were stocky/short-reach and could hit hard.

Are we talking MMA or boxing? Cause in boxing there are many, many examples of short guys who do extremely well.

I was actually talking about MMA but any examples would be nice. I was watching some Igor Vovchanchyn fights and he seems to do pretty well even though he was only 5'8''. The only thing about him though is that his shots get kinda wild.

Well, I'll stick to MMA then becuase the boxing list would go ON AND ON. In MMA short successful strikers are less common.

I have seen some good strikers in MMA fights that have a shorter reach than there opponent. Like was said earlier timing is everything. If you really want to be a good striker in MMA fights then I believe that as a fighter you need to work on your striking from the tie-up/clinch/plum. I have seen alot of fighters in this position that throw and land some really big punches on there opponent but they are usually thrown with mostly the arms. There is usually no body twisting/movement to go along with the punches. When you are in the tie up, man that is the perfect place to utilize your body to generate power to hurt your opponent...do some shifting and a little footwork and generate all that power in the punch...man that is the sweet stuff when you can do that and the land the punch right on the mark.

OK, but I think we can all agree that we don't really see any shorter guys doing much with technical striking. That seems to belong exclusively to the lanky Mirko Crocops and Anderon Silva types.

For the shorter guys, getting to the clinch or working GnP seems to be their striking game.
Fedor actually comes to mind...he's not tall for his weight class, although his arms seem pretty long. And he's pretty good on his feet as well.

This is just in MMA. A short-reach hard hitter can make a better living in boxing than in MMA.

Mike Tyson (5'10" 71" reach) got into a real street fight with pro-heavyweight boxer Mitch Green (6'5" 240-lb 82" reach). Word is that Mitch tried to inimidate Tyson, sucker punched him and tried to rough him up.

Tyson knocked him out and broke his face.
