Default The Judo Guard?

Here's a clip from Mike Swain's Newaza dvd. He's demonstrating some chokes from what looks like the Judo guard. Is their guard used in the same way it is in BJJ or do Judo stylist have a slightly different approach and use for the guard?

The closed guard isn't really emphasized in Judo. The position isn't considered "active" enough for the limited time allowed for newaza. Closing the guard will result in the ref standing the two players back up.

My Judo coach yells at me every time I close my guard - "stalemate bull!@#$" is what he calls it.

That said, judoka use most of the same basic sweeps and submissions from the guard that BJJ folk do.
