![]() ![]() ![]() | I think you want to be very comfortable with the credentials and promotion standards of your instructors before you spend a lot of time training with them. In the case of BJJ, for example, you would want to know what your instructor's competition background is and who his instructor is. If your instructor has trained under a well-known Gracie, Machado or other top black belt and has a strong record in MMA or submission grappling competition, you can be pretty confident that you will be receiving first-rate instruction and you will not be promoted unless you deserve it. If your instructor does not have such a background, he may still be a very good instructor and knowledgeable practitioner, but you should probably ask some more questions about his qualifications. Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous instructors in every style -- even the rare instructor in styles like BJJ that are generally very intolerant of poseurs and very conservative with respect to rank -- who will award rank to students more willing to pay than to train. The forums on this site and on www.bullshido.com are good places to ask questions if you have any doubts about an instructor's bona fides. |
