    kyokoshin wing chun

Cheers and how ya doin'. I have been on a quest recently.
It is my opinion that a new(or perhaps not so new) type of "real life" applicable way of thinking/fighting/defending is pretty much in order.

How about training in a sport art (I call them sport arts because I feel sport and "alive" are pretty much the same mindset, utilizing your best abilities as someone attemps to oppose you using theirs. Kano was a damn sharp bloke. I think it would be wise to dig up on his advice on good ol' randori) and then mix it up with a "what if" art. What do I mean by a "what if" art?

I have been practising judo and also wing chun for about a year now.
And recently at a Halloween party, my brother in law (fully pissed on booze) went friggin' nuts and attacked me. He threw a couple big punches my way which (using wing chun hand and footwork) I blocked and evaded.
I think my blocks hurt him a bit.
    Mind you I am 5'6" 160lbs and he is about 6'1" 200lbs.
He then grabbed me by the throat as he charged at me(man did that suck!) but somehow I went with his momentum (judo) rolled back and somehow got him into an armbar (in the process I got a pretty good cut on my cranium from a coffee table, I didn't know head wounds bled so damn much!) Very friggin' sad actually. I wish it never happened. It must have looked extra rediculous because everyone was dressed in nutty holloween costumes and singing karoke!!! lol

I have a damn cool w/c sifu though(William Cheung lineage). Perhaps his teaching techniques might even be considered "alive". He's competed in full contact kyokoshin karate bouts(hope my spelling is right) so maybe he's using some of that influence. Don't rightly know.

He'll do stuff like stand in front of me and randomly throw uppercuts, jabs, and haymakers while we both wear chest, leg and elbow pads, hand wraps, and a football helmet(the helmet was my idea so we could start hitiing with elbows and fists to the head area). It seems he tries to teach me mainly stuff that can be practised full power. When I fail to execute properly (happens more than I like to admit), I feel the full power of that fist coming.
I am just recently grasping upon executing the fundementals of both Judo and w/c. But I got a little taste of "real" (weird) world application that night with my enebriated bro-in-law. Tastes alot like Halloween candy too! lol

All I know is I am having a great time mixing a supposed "dead" art (w/c) with the almighty judo that kicks my ass into beach body shape.

Not everyone is badass enough to compete in MMA. Some of us just want to find a mix that suits our needs. I am an open minded reasonable bloke. Any opinions and/or insights are truly appreciated. I guess since this my first time posting I'm a bit of a rookie. Rock on and thanks!

p.s. This post is sort of a cut and paste that I posted on another thread. Just looking for comments and good advice from you more learned fellas.

When I get in fights with my little brother, people get gouged in the eyes, stabbed with ice picks, hit over the head with cooking mortors, hit in the back with baseball bats, pushed through walls, have chunks bitten out of their arms, dislocated joints, choked out, knocked out, teeth chipped, bottles crashed over bones and skulls, etc etc.

    So...yeah...domestic abuse is awesome

Good god man! After all that violence with your lil bro, I'm amazed that y'all had the energy to post a reply!
I'm hearing duelling banjos being played in the background for some strange reason. Try counseling or church, not martial arts or fighting.
I hope you blokes sort it all out...but domestic violence is pretty much unforgivable.

Oh...you don't want me in a nunnery. Adultery is bad enough, but if your nailing Jesus's bride...wow, lookout.

Yeah...as for counseling, things have gotten "better" in the past few years...and yeah...he saw a psychiatrist and I see a LCSW. And...I'm training to be a headshrinker. Voodoo and cognitive behavioral and depth psychology to rid the world of it's ailments is my goal. Whoo-ha!
