What three would you learn? Why? Describe them for us as best you can.
-Ground-n-Pound doesn't count as a 'finish', even if it does work pretty good- I suggest figure-four should be on the list because it can be applied from almost any position with only slight variations. It's hard to describe on paper, but there are many videos on the web breaking it down The knee bar should be included, because it comes up so often in the course of a roll - if you don't know it, you'll miss a lot of opportunities and get caught. The third is harder - either the armbar or the guillotine. Both come up often enough... Somebody please argue with me, I'm trying to help a fellow member get started.

Lapel Choke (lots of variations).
Not many people know how to properly escape it other than just striking. If they bring their arms up to resist, you can transition to other moves involving their arms... Side Choke (lots of variations) Another choke that can be done while standing up or on the ground. I've found myself randomly ending up into perfect position to do a side choke while rolling. For stand-up side chokes, you can set it up with a duck under after locking up or even slipping a straight punch to the face. Armbar Both the standing armbar as a restraining hold, a break or the finishing armbar from the ground. Any time your opponent gives you an arm is an opportunity for an armbar: a punch, a push, a grab attempt etc.

I am particularly fond of the triangle choke, guy is on top throws an arm forwards, catch and pull, throw legs over, lock in choke,
valuable for blood choke, and/or arm bar Also triangle from mount is a good one Guillotine from standing or on ground.

Lapel chokes - yes, I overlooked that in my list. Set up from anywhere, lots of variations and they can be used to help manipulate the opponent (turn him over, and whatnot)

The figure 4 is very very easy to reverse; if you know how.

Yea, but nobody wears ghi's in competition anymore. I am assuming you are talking about MMA.

I thought he was just talking about a general case because jackets, coats or solid material will work. Even a t-shirt will work - except if its cheap material, then it'll rip.

I was talking mostly about sport grappling.
I wasn't being specific about gi vs. no-gi because I'm interested in different people's opinions so didn't want to limit it too much.

So, not a lot of votes for knee bar/ankle lock/heel hooks then? I find especially when things are slippery, people often find themselves in ankle lock/heel hook wars... Not everybody's experience?

Depending on the rules, you gotta watch out for the other foot. You could be on the receiving end of a very nasty thrust kick.
