![]() ![]() | I was doing some wrestling/bjj tonight I am not too bad at it, I mean I am 145 pounds and I beat most of the guys in that weight category but when I step in with bigger guys ranging from 170 to 200 pounds, I just get my ass handed to me I may have superior technique , but they just use their weight and sheer strength to rip me off of them...... I am curious can you guys give me some good practical advice for what kind of techniques are useful against larger opponents, and the weaknesses they have . I am faster more agile, and more skilled than many of them, but once I get close they just overpower me.. Help guys!!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Well, if you just meet them weight for weight they will just tire you with their mass and then you will lose any advantage of mobility. However, if you make a show of meeting them head-on in a collar tie or the like, many bigger guys will overcommit and you can set them up for a completely demoralizing throw. Nothing like throwing someone 100 + lbs. heavier than you to totally humiliate them. You can try to work arm-drags and the like and try to take the corner on them where you can work a takedown without their weight being so much a factor. Also, don't be afraid to take a shot! A lot of folks are terrified about getting caught under a bigger guy, but if you can finish quickly (it'll take a bit of extra effort, but...) you can put him on the mat before he has a chance to use his obvious advantage. Be prepared to switch off and move outside at angles of course. The bad news is that if these bigger guys are as good as you, you are pretty much screwed no matter how you slice it. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

There was another guy who was also about 180 and the rest of the guys were 210, 232, 244, 226 etc. I'll add that these guys also knew what they were doing and were fit! Talk about rag doll... If you're strong for your size, you'll be able to hold onto them, but that's about it. Work with their strength, not against it. Resist just enough to get their push or pull and then go the opposite direction and you might be able to steer them. Other than that, just hang in there, use your speed to your advantage and think. | |

![]() ![]() | Thanks guys, I like Jubaji's suggestions about working at angles on their body's so it is harder for them to gain the leverage to lift me, cause yeah, pretty much I was meeting the head on, and they would just throw me over, and thanks tom for the advice on using their force against them, next time I grapple I will definetly be smarter and try new things thanks guys, Jiu-fu

![]() ![]() | And now that I really reflect, the reason I got beaten was because I did not change my tactics and adapt. when i was facing the guys my size I would just meet them head on and take them down, but when doing that to the big guys well, they would just rip me off, so next time yeah I will try angles, perhaps a nice guillotine on his head, hanging off on a 45 degree angle to his body,.... yeah I have lots to learn thanks again guys

Sasae tsurikomi ashi, is my favorite against the larger guys, they always push forward for some reason. With that said, to the OP: You said wrestling and BJJ, so I'm gonna assume you went to the ground. If you need to control the big guys on the ground, I cant stress underhooks enough, if your standing up and you just know wrestling, underhooks are prolly the way to go too. (Using judo you use alot more funny ass grips when doing No-Gi standup because you need to, it sucks sometimes, nothing wrong with double unders though). On the ground though, side control, half gaurd, get that under hook and pin them there, its what stops them from smashing you with their size.

| Registered User | When you're standing up I'd try to shy away from the tie ups, personally. Even if you have a superior tie up they'll use their weight to muscle you around. So either get a tie up and immediately go straight for the takedown or not at all, I say.

![]() | alot has to do with power and how you use it. i was wrestling with some bjj guys because they wanted to work on takedowns. most of the time they kick my ass and tap me, but this is where i felt more comfterable. they out weighed me probably by 30 40 pounds and i didnt have that hard of a time. the key is to let them use there momentum and turn it around on them. if they push into you, let them. if you feel like they are putting alot of energy into a takedown i say let them because the more they put into it the harder it is for them to stop. let them go one way, sell it as if your going with them and go the other way. if they are much stronger than you act as if you are weak then when they are vulnerable take them down or reverse the take down by going in the other direction. if you are shooting in on larger guys always have a hand on the neck. use the neck to bring the body down as you sweep to the side. always find a way to use the upper body and or lower body against them at the same time.
