Kimbo has been training with American Top Team (ATA) for a short time now. He is scheduled to fight "Merciless" Ray Mercer in a bout at the Caged Fighter Fury circuit. Mercer himself, a top former heavyweight boxer has made a K-1 debut and has been cross training in MMA.
Any thoughts? http://www.touchgloves.com/news/2007...mbo_slice.html Not sure about Kimbo's chin - he's a really big guy, but most of his streetfights are against guys who swing with all arm and no body power. If Mercer lands and he probably will, Kimbo is going to feel something he's never felt before...If Kimbo lands, I think Mercer can shake it off well. He's fought a lot of big names in heavyweight professional boxing and has handled a true professionals power. Unless Kimbo cuts a little weight, Mercer will be able to walk circles around him with foot work. On the ground, I think Kimbo might have more of a chance as Mercer is also new to ground fighting and may be able to muscle his way if his technique is lacking but Mercer still has a fighters instincts and is probbaly able to pick up the ground game quickly (like Mo Smith). I think Kimbo is going to come out strong and show that he has potential, but the strongest fighter he's faced up to this point is a gentleman whose a decent amateur MMA fighter, but not a professional boxer. Mercer by TKO in 2nd round.

I'm lookign forward to this. Kimbo is always an entertaining fighter, even if his cardio is horrible and he has mostly only fought low skill fighters.
Besides, he's gotta get HIS BREAD !!!

how long do you mean when you say short time training?
cause if kimbo can grasp some takedown, and get a feel for positioning, he might have a bit of an edge on someones whose only a boxer, and one thats getting older at that. how old is kimbo btw? |

I agree that Kimbo is a very exciting fighter to watch and hits heavy. He will definitely come out swinging, but we remember when a certain retired heavyweight (at age 60) fought Butterbean. Bean, with proven knockout power, ate like eleventy-seventy billion jabs and got treated like a heavybag.
Kimbo should be fighting Butterbean or Tank. Kimbo vs. Bean would be great. Kimbo vs. Tank would be more exciting, because both fighters don't give a damn, hit hard and would be talking alot of smack about each other.

If Kimbos been training hard hell win. The last time I saw Mercer fight was when Klitchsko ran through him a couple years back, he was old even for then, fat, wayyy out of shape. It was pathetic.

Judging from his fight with(Gannon????) the cop, he has some wrestling background... at the very least at a high school level. Whether that has relavance I'm not sure yet. American Top Team is a great school to go to so I'm sure he'll do alright. His couisn(an olympic Judoka and one of Monson's close friends and trainers) will be helping him train from what I hear. Being trained by a BJJ blackbelt, Olympic Judoka, world class personal trainer and nutritionist can't hurt lol.

Still say Mercer should walk through him if he doesn't take this fight lightly.
Mercer's was a successful pro boxer...he'll hit harder and more often, and Kimbo's grappling in his undergroun matches was pretty much nonexistent. And he doesn't exactly have a lot of time to get good at it. He'll probably end up slipping back into old habits and start swinging with Mercer, where he's gonna get killed. |

It wont take long to get good when he obviously has at least SOME wrestling background, with his world class, amazing grappler cousin helping him.
