Thanks to you to DickHardman, missed reading your post first time somehow.
I do think i should charge more sometimes when i see what some others with less experience than me charge, but as i said on another post to Ghost i try and keep prices so any and everyone can afford to train. Also i like to think that i dont charge for my knowledge(as im only passing it on) but i do charge for my time(which unfortunately doesnt come back!) |

I don't teach privates - well, I have, but only on the odd occasion when only one student showed up for my class LOL. I wasn't in charge of pricing for those, so I just went with the school policy, which was if there's only one person there, the class goes for 45 minutes not 1 hour.
As a student, how much I would pay would really depend on a bunch of circumstances. Of course, the circumstances of my life right at that time would play into it - where I'm at in my training, how much I've had to spend on groceries that week, how many days till the mortgage payment comes out of my bank account LOL ![]() Other than that, it would also be about the instructor - who they are, how much I thought of them, what I thought they could offer me at that point in my training, and how "rare" an opportunity it was to train with them. As in, if it was someone visiting Australia who's only going to be here for a week and hasn't been here for 5 years, that's going to rank higher on the rarity scale than getting a private with my own coach. I've heard of instructors who charge ridiculous amounts for privates because they don't really want to teach them. But if there are students willing to pay that, then they'll do it. Kind of like Royce Gracie's professional fights these days!

I owe you. I wish others would follow your example. I'm getting kind of sick of reading my opinion from five years ago and wondering "did I really post that?"

The states and the uk, having lived in both, are definately different for private fees... the most expensive guys in the uk are generally the jkd guys i have found or very accomplished mma/bjj guys..
for the brits i trained with mick coup £40 hour but as I was training 4 hours a time, he was charging £30 hour and if you read martial arts illustrated etc hes quite a big name on the uk circuit... In the uK you earn pounds not dollars, and I tend to look at cost of things in terms of 1=1 in most states... In the states people charge a lot more for lessons generally, i paid £70 a month for unlimited lessons 6 days a week from a top notch teacher in london, and other schools were comparable... in the states in an affluent city you are going to pay $70 for 1 taekwondo lesson per week per month.... in london you'd pay less than that by far I trained in an mma school in montana for $25 a month, unlimited lessons 6 days a week which is the best deal ive seen going ![]() With privates what you charge also affects how many people you get doing privates, so if you want to uild up a good private base you charge less and advertise the fact you have slots open for privates at a good price.. |
