Default i brutalized someone on the mat today

today i was rolling with a higher ranked guy who was going rough and doing things that were somewhat unnecessary inmop, like forcing lapel chokes that were over my face and nowhere near my neck with 100% force for long periods of time. i got really angry. it really lit a fire under me. i ended up brutalizing this dude. i think i went too far. i feel kinda bad about it. i ended up bench pressing him off me with pure strength and then pinned his head and face to the floor with my shoulder as hard as i could till he was tired out, and then i put his face in an arm triangle and squeezed till he went limp from his face being crushed, and then i armbarred him hard and i was so angry i didnt hear him yelling for me to stop. i didnt feel a tap so i didnt stop. i feel kinda bad. am i the bad guy here?? this went on for a while before i armbarred him, i kept his face pinned to the floor with my shoulder and let him flap around helplessly till there wasnt an ounce of energy left in him. it was pretty bad. there a few guys on the side watching and they looked kinda shocked. i kinda feel like a bully. this dude was a higher rank, though im in better shape, and he was going as hard as possibly on me. i for sure lost control of my actions. what would you guys have done?? i did apologize to the guy for his arm. i would have stopped immediately had i heard him or felt the tap. dude, he wasnt ok afterward. he not only looked beat up, he look pretty shaken mentally. he jammed right afterwards and didnt say anything to anyone.

ive had this in sparrig in the uk, warn him first, at least once.
When ive sparred with guys that are trying to knock me out ill say"calm down take it easy" then ill say"if your trying to knock me out ill try and knock you out" then if it continues i go for a knock out.
If people arent going to listen to a warning that you dont want to train like that then take them out.
I think you should have said something to him first. say you dont want to train like that and then warn him if he continues you will up it to the level he is training at.

Obviously if the other guy is new then you just stop whats happening and walk away.

Before I spar with anyone, I always establish an agreement of how hard we are going and what we are trying to achieve. If someone then breaks that agreement (happens all the time) then I’ll stop and try to bring them back on track. After that it depends. If the person is not very good and is just being a prick and wasting my training time, then I’ll probably just say “ok mate, lets leave it there”. I don’t need to knock them out to satisfy my ego. However if they are good, and are just being competitive to up the ante, then I will up the ante too.

Through all of these scenarios though, the coach or instructor should be around to carefully watch all sparring, its his job to make sure no one is stepping out of line or getting hurt.

The guy you rolled with sounds like a prick. I maybe would have stopped and spoken to him, but I know a lot of guys don’t like to do that because they think it makes them look like they can’t hack it. At the end of the day we’re learning how to fight, so if a guy gets on the mat and behaves like a prick, it probably won’t do his attitude any harm to get slammed.

Nowadays i would of tapped if i thought he was going to rough, then asked if we could drop the pace and power a bit.
years ago i would of done something similar to what you did.

I guess you just gota put it down to learning about yourself and try to think what you would do next time if it happened again.

This is my beef with BJJ classes. We all end up sooner or later with the dude who tries some quasi-dirty tactics on us that piss us off.

I've had two different guys try "pressure point" fighting on me. I called one guy out on it, "um, are you trying to submit me by pushing on that pressure point?" He was digging his knuckles in on the side of the jaw. Yeah, it hurt but it mainly just pissed me off.

Or you get the guy who tries to kill you with his knee on belly. WTF?

I think these idiots deserve what you dished out. I did something similar but probably even worse. I was grappling with a huge guy--6'4 probably 285 or more. He was not that good technically speaking, but c'mon he's like 300 lbs. So, needless to say I wore myself out trying to move his body around. I was gasping for air and said, "I need a break." He said something stupid like I didn't hear a bell and full on attacked me.

I reverted back to wrestling. I put him in a headlock of all things and squeezed his fat freak'n head until he was nearly suffocated and tapped out. Believe me, you have to squeeze someone's head very hard to get them to cry out in pain. I get pissed just thinking about it. That fat f*ck deserved it. I'm sure the dude you punished did too.

I think the most important thing about rolling is to keep communication with the guy you're training with. If he ups the intensity a little, adjust upward. The point is to control without going ape-shit and doing damage.

Grappling classes I've attended divide the class to under 180-lbs and 180-lbs and up or something similar. I weighed something like 182 at the time.. so I KNOW what you mean! lol

Some people just don't "get it".

If some guy was doing 100% lapel chokes on my face I'd have been pissed off too. I don't think I'd have "brutalized" him, but I definitely would have turned it up a little bit to show him how it feels.

Next time just try not to lose your temper. If you're going to get "revenge" on someone, do it with a clear head so you'll have control and won't feel bad about it afterwards.

I think you both probably learned your lesson.

There is an unwritten rule in rolling--I'll go as hard as you go. If I ask you to ease up and you don't then you have been warned. After all, you have to come there every week. Nice job, I hope it doesn't escalate off the mat.
