If you can't keep your base on the guy, don't use that position. Go for the knee on the belly or some other position. It's may not be the only way, but it's probably the best way to overcome a physical inability to stabilize. Like any tool, if it doesn't work in a given situation, use something else that does.
I've always been able to keep a low mount with the hooks in on bigger guys, by the way. This might be what you're referring to with the Japanese Mount reference, but I am unfamiliar with that term. |

First things first, you're going to get rolled over if he's fresh simply because he's that much bigger and stronger than you. Keep doing what you're doing and as he gasses it'll be harder for him to roll you.
Another kind of mount I like to use is a bit weird. Instead of grapevining his legs or riding up high in his pits, I like to lock my feet below his hip then hip into him. At this point my knees are probably going to be off the ground but all my weight and hip is driving into his gut, making it really hard for him to move and sucking the air out of him (I've seen Renzo Gracie use this kind of position when finishing a mounted guillotine). Since your knees are not touching the ground, it's important that you spread your arms out kind of like you're Superman and teeter-totter yourself back in place like that of training wheels on a bike. Try it out and tell me if it works for you. Hate to advertise my grappling videos again but you can kind of see me use it when I mount the guy in this video although I used my hands to lift his head so he couldn't bridge instead of having the arms out. I'm a 6'5" fat Jiu-Jitsu guy and most people cannot pull a straight mount on me either. Mike's suggestion of trying Knee-On-Belly (KOB) is a great one. Spend some time on the transitions from KOB to reverse KOB, front and back spin to the otherside KOB and so on . . . The keys to KOB are pressure and movement.
The mount that can work is what I was taught as "technical mount" which is one knee down and the foot posted on the opposite side.

I've got long legs, so I don't know how well this works for guys with shorter legs, but if I'm mounted on a guy who's that much bigger than me (which doesn't happen often), I like to keep disconnected. Let him move however he wants, but don't let him move me with him. If I'm making lots of contact, all he has to do is roll over and I go. If I have limited contact, he rolls and I get an opportunity for an armbar, triangle, or back control (and I'd like to emphasize the opportunity part... definitely not guaranteed, sometimes I end up on bottom anyway, but as a principle it's worked better for me than anything else I've tried so far).
