Default Situation I

OK

You have just stood up from the bottom position. Your opponent is standing behind you, with a cross wrist.

....go!

The opponent has a cross-wrist, effectively giving you only one hand to work with.

Break the wrist grip as best I can while keeping my hips away from him then go for a standing Switch.

Lock both hands together and pull your arms away pushing towards the weakest point in his grip (i.e. the thumb)

If I'm imagining and interpreting the original post correctly, he essentially has a 2on1 grip on me, right? For that case I'd Keep my hips away from him while leaning into him, all the while I'd be trying to fish my free hand under his near wrist and on top of his far wrist, then popping his 2on1 grip. With only one hand controlling that arm, I can swim out with it to break it and spin to face him.

The weakest point of the grip is NOT the thumb, tree. It's the eyeball. Insert pointer finger two knuckles deep, and the grip will come loose every time. I promise.

Sorry. I know it's an MMA thread so I'll step out now. Just wanted to correct that one thing for our women's self-protection fans.

Lower your base trap his arm and load him for a throw. Can you do that in wrestling?

I can reach the middle of my back with both hands. Plus, no grip on the wrist is going to completely keep you from turning.

Well, if he's behind you with a cross-wrist he's gonna have it pulled tight against your abdomen and control the elbow of the same arm keeping it tight against your abdomen as well.

Pretty tough to turn.

True enough. But the eyes and the ball bag are weaker points in a grip than the thumb. If I can't reach one, I'll likely be able to get ot the other. And if he's grabbing me with both hands, he's not hitting me with them and I know right where they are.

'Course, I was being a smart-ass before, but if it's me and we're not talking about a ring fight (ie, I'm really worried about getting mangled), my free hand is likely busy sheathing a knife in his pelvis. That'll make a fella let go, too.

If it is in the ring? He's not going to submit me like that, and if he wants to do anything of consequence, he's either going to have to let go (to hit) or he's going to have to start moving to throw/takedown. Both of those offer opportunities to improve position and work offensively.

Leaving aside the issue raised before of the decision to start carving up some unarmed stooge who just happens to be fighting with you and may, depending on the situation, be less a threat to your life than to your ego, 'waiting' for him to do something for you to respond to seems to put you at something of a disadvantage.
