I do long runs/swims to work on stamina but also do specific-event type training as well.

Back in the (very) old high school days many of us on the wrestling team were also on the football team, track, etc. during other seasons and even folks in great shape for other sports knew that 'wrestling shape' was a different thing altogether. Optimal conditioning is specific to the task, at least when functioning at a high level in that task.

I agree with Jub. In my experience, wrestlers are the monsters of conditioning.

Now, if you take a wrestler who has COMPLETELY dehydrated himself to make weight, and hasn't an ounce of water left in his system, then he will gas quickly.

But, in my experience, wrestlers are conditioned.

Yeah, I even remember one of the guys on my high school wrestling team boxed during the summer. After his first few wrestling sessions, he said "Man, this shits harder than boxin'!"

Football players, coming in at the end of their season in their best shape, would routinely puke mid practice until they had a week in or so..

In my experience, wrestlers have great endurance.

Same thing happens when a wrestler goes through a boxing session. They feel like they were out of shape. A Triathlete would get very tired (quickly) after a wrestling or boxing session, especially if sparring. Different muscles are used different things.
