Now that you are all here,
how well do you think I (or anyone) might make a transition from BJJ to judo? I'm still pondering the possibility of going back to Japan to teach English for a while after I get my BD. If I do, I have thought about possibly competing, or at least getting involved again with judo.

Because of BJJ, I feel my newaza is somewhat okay although I know a lot of the moves are illegal in judo groundfighting. My throws are horrible, and I need to work on them. But other than that, do you think a transition from BJJ to judo would be easy? Say I did compete or joined the Kodokan, do you think my BJJ experience might make things much easier for me? Give me an edge over others even? Or do you think that might be an illusion?

Thanks

Take care,
Ryu

Ryu:

Hey, buddy.

I'm not an expert in either BJJ or Judo, but it seems to me that under Judo rules regarding newaza, you will probably feel handicapped and not do very well initially. So the short answer is, no, your BJJ will not help your Judo much.

However, learning Judo is extremely worthwhile, and will enhance your overall game tremendously. But it will be tough, particularly in Japan.

That's why, if you have time and money, you should do it.

My 2 cents.

EJ:

At least we know he can already do a very good tomoe-nage!

But why study Judo when you can hurl fireballs and execute the dreaded "Dragon Punch" to perfection?

EJ
heh heh we all fall to the darkside every once in a while. Oh yes, and "Hadouken" is the word you're looking for. (Hey I research my handle hahaha)

Ronin, thanks for the post.
The reason I am thinking his is because I was usually good at always getting a top position or "hold down" (actual position not just sitting in guard) in my BJJ rolling. I figured I might be able to make it work in a newaza setting, but like any hard sport, if I expect it to be easy, I'll get murdered.

Come on everyone else, post till your heart's consent

I think you'll be able to pull off wicked armbars and armlocks against them.

Ryu:

You may want to consider a starting with traditional Ju Jitsu. You can always learn the rules to Judo. I feel you should get a well round arsenal of techniques. I feel Judo is not quite as comprehensive in a lot of street techniques. Just as tournament BJJ is not what you would use in every day situations or Vale Tudo.

Just my brain cranking out the smoke.

You say your throws are horrible then ask if your bjj will give you the edge over judo players. Yes man, you are having an illusion .

I'm pretty good with a clinch and a double leg, too bad the rules would get in the way
hehe but in all maturity...HAHA Patty only has 33 posts! Go get some experience before we listen to you, you virgin poster! LOL, just kidding Patterson.
I do need to work on my throwing if I am even going to consider judo. I could be a blackbelt in groundfighting but it wouldn't do me any good if I kept getting thrown on my ass for ippon.

Cleatus, thanks for the input. I think what attracts me to judo is the philosophy and spirit of it. It kind of represents a cultural love in a way as well as a sport.
As far as street techniques, well I am only thinking about it in a purely sport/experience kind of thing. I've used my grappling in the street before, and I'm somewhat content with it. Some strength, good clinching, takedowns, ground and pound, footwork, strong punches, and a little skill with a knife can go a long way I feel.
But as far as sport judo, I was just contemplating it if I can go back to Japan. Thank you, though. I appreciate your comments.

Hmmm the sucky thing is that I don't have any money right now to join a school again. I'd hate to jump right into the Kodokan cold turkey! But hell, that might be the most fun too.

Thanks guys,
Take care,

Ryu

By the way, I AM aware of the irony that I, myself, have only 36 posts. Lighten up, everyone...

(don't mind me...I think my constant college work is starting to effect my social behavior)
