Hi everyone, a fitness club near my house offers JKD, Muay Thai and grappling in a separate room with bags, a ring and the whole works. I was wondering, is the quality of the things they teach watered down and degraded due to the fact, its in a fitness club? Anyone practice in a club like this? Do you think the quality will not be affected at all? I visited the place today, but the instructor wasnt in. Its $500.00 flat for a whole year and you can take any class and everyclass AND use the gym facilities for free. I know that they spar, so it cant be that bad right? I've heard fishy things about both hte owner of MAFA and Premier (the gym) so I have no idea on what to do. Also is Savate a good ring sport? Comparable to Muay Thai?

Thumbs up

$500 for a whole year of gym facilities and you can take any class included? That sounds pretty good to me. Also, if they have a separate room for muy thai, JKD, and grappling, then they must be quite serious about these. Sign up now dude. I mean it, put down that beer and get to it!

Dude, it's a case-by case scenario, the only way you're going to know for sure what it's like and if they teach "cardio muay thai" with a class full of spandex/leotard wearing fairy's is by calling the psychic hotline or visiting the school for yourself. in otherwords, get your lazy ass outta bed and get down there to see for yourself.

Exclamation DO IT!!!!

Geez, for $500 flat you get any classes you want, free usage of the equipment AND one year's gym membership??? Hell, even if the instructor sux, at the very least you are still getting a lot of sparring partners, usage of training equipment and a place to lift weights for a year. What more do you want?

Cool

It depends on the instructor. When I was in college many years ago, there was a hole-in-the-wall gym where a guy was teaching Muay Thai for just helping with the cost of renting the aerobics room. Was the guy qualified? He was an amateur Thai boxer straight from Thailand, could have gone pro but a badly broken leg or hip ended his fighting career. Not too shabby for a small college town with a 1000sq ft gym and the only MA training available was this guy and the local TKD school.

I agree. It sounds awfully cheap for a whole year--why not?

I WOULD, however, ask to attend one free class to get a feelf or the instructor. If he's an absolute tool, you're f***ed because they've already got your money.

If they won't let you take a free class, then something's wrong.

Otherwise, though, that is dirt cheap. There are many health clubs in Chicago that offer serious MA instruction (The Carlson Gracie Jr. school is in a health club, so is the Shidokan Karate team at CFC), so the venue is unimportant.

BTW, Savate is definitely worth studying, too.

Thanks guys, since its been open only a month, Im going to let them iron out the little inconsistancies that may occur. Gym is nice and clean. Has hella lot of bags and the ring is cool too. I just hope they are serious about training. Im going to check it out ASAP.
