I was a blue for a little over 3 years, and I train everyday, except Sunday. Under Rey Diogo.

It took me a little over 4 years. I workout doing something
every day. If I'm not physically doing something, I'm doing it mentally, which I've recently found out means just as much.

Default Hura,...

Do you think Rey was harder or more demanding of you than other students?

Blue to Purple...geeze! I'd be happy with a blue piece of tape on my white belt. Solid white (gi and belt) is just so boring, you know? I want some color to make the gi look better. Patches can only do so much - LOL!

Peace

It took me slightly over 2 years to go from blue to purple. I was training 3 or 4 times per week.

I've now been a purple-belt for longer than I was a blue-belt. How long did your purple to brown transition take? What were the key things you learned that put you at a brown-belt level?

I don't know why so many people ask this question. Progression through the ranks is very case-specific, and heavily depends upon the instructor, and more importantly the individual. How fast someone else progresses often means very little about your progression. If all you worry about is belt ranks, then BJJ probably isn't the ideal "hobby."

I'm with the lieutenant on this one. Think about it: what good is a purple if the blues makes you play the conga all the time; or the whites with the blues? I'm sure it feels good wearing that purple or brown, or maybe even a blue, but with that also comes responsibilities that's attached to that individual belt. Honestly, I'd rather be the lower belt tapping the higher belts. Somehow it's good for the ego...

I get rolled up by some blue belts, mauled by most purples, punked by browns, and prison beeched by black belts... but I have never tapped to a white belt since I got my blue (*THUMP* *THUMP* knock on wood!).

At our school - Carlson Gracie, Jr., the blue to purple transition seems to take longer than the white to blue. Most people seem to go white to blue in 1.5-2 years if they train 3+/week. However, we have some very good senior blue belts that have been blues for at least 3 years. So it seems that your average blue belt will take maybe 4 years to make purple, I'd guess.

I think that Carlson really wants a high level of technique and grappling ability before you make purple. He does not seem to give this out lightly at all!

One of our students used to train with Renzo in NYC and said that blue belts were a bit easier to get than at Carlson's, but that purple belts were harder. Renzo wants his blue belts to be excellent competitors and technicians before he would even consider them for promotion.

Hawk, do you ever get the urge to bust out the lube & get physcial when you do it mentally? I find it hard to imagine mentally giving you the same satisfaction as physically. I guess that's what you have to resort to when your mind says yes but your body doesn't respond.

A couple of years ago, it took me 30 seconds to go from blue to purple when I was having bronchospasms. And I did this w/out an instructor.

Question Brian...

soooooooooooo... you go after HAWK's "mental" post, but you don't take advantage of HURA's "Rey made it really hard for me..." post?!?!?!?!

You're slipping.

And don't try that "gentleman" angle either, we ALL know how you are. (lol)
