UK Sambo Wrestling Championships
On July 1 2000, the Federation of Russian Martial Arts UK (FORMA UK) held their 2nd UK Sambo Wrestling Championships at the English Olympic Wrestling Academy, Salford, Manchester, England. Sambo players travelled as far afield as Scotland and Plymouth and with good representation from South Wales, Midlands, Tyneside and several local clubs, this was truly a national event. Phoenix Bolton dominated the junior events, winning nearly all of the weight groups and together with the senior players coming away with medals, they were the resounding overall team trophy winners with 61 points. Abu Dhabi Correspondent Carl Fisher (Phoenix Bolton) rounded off a fine days wrestling with a Bronze medal and was awarded his 2nd Dan in Shiai from his instructor. Team coach Trevor Roberts 8th Dan said ‘ we can’t wait until next year, we will bring an even bigger team- what a great day’s wrestling!’ Westwood Judo and Sambo from Eccles, Manchester, had the lion’s share of the senior medals, having finalists in five of the seven senior categories. Team coach Alan Carlisle, 5th Dan threw down the gauntlet by saying ‘ next time we will bring more juniors and try to give Trevor a run for his money!’ Tsyclon Sambo from Gosport had their team coach Darrin Richardson competing and leading from the front, entering the –90K, -100K and Open weight categories, winning Bronze, Bronze and Silver respectively. This fantastic display of fitness, determination and guts has underlined Darrin’s ability and dedication he shows to Sambo. Throughout the day the crowd lent their vocal support to all who competed and were treated to some excellent displays of wrestling and sportsmanship by both junior and senior players, as well as impartial refereeing.
