A premise first:
Here in Italy there are alot of illegal immigrant from north africa, ususally they sell merchandise on the streets, sometimes they sell around, and every now and then one of them enter my shop trying to sell something to my clients; usually they are pretty polite, I have nothing against them or their work, I view them as unfortunate brothers, I strongly think that the entire life is made by endless casual combinations of events: one roll of the dice and I may be in their place. That premised, this evening one of this sellers, an african man entered my shop high on booze and drugs (very strange thing, the vast majority of them are strict muslims), there were two cops (not in uniform), they did comment the fact that the guy smelled alchol. but they left. The black guy did start harassing two youngs in a table, so i told him to left. The guy went completely berkserk, shouting racist insults to me (fascist, nazi, and so on,,) I calmly replied that I'm no racist but he must left NOW. So the guy dropped the bag he carried and threatened to cut my testicles, so I went berkserk to. In a handful of seconds I have insulted his race, mother, father, religion, himself and his wife and sister. The guy exited my shop, obviously wanting to fight. Well right now, I'm kinda relaxed, so I did the obvious: did collect my salive and pit him in face. This is a useful distraction before drawing a knife, I draw my spyderco endura from my front pocket, and did a slash to his jacket's sleeve. The guy backpedalled fairly quick, shouted some more obscenities and left for good. Later on I was told he got caught by the police. End of the story. |

Underdog, does spitting really work well before drawing a knife? I've never done it, but luckily my fights didn't involve any knives. Though I sometimes carry one (under 5 1/2 inches of course )Also, I wanted to ask... in your opinion is it better to stab with a knife? When slashing I have sometimes noticed that the blade will not always go through tough materials (leather jacket, etc) (I work with dummies for more than just grappling )Ryu |

Stuart, I own a Coffee shop, sorta elegant place, usually frequented by girls and over thirty clients searching for espresso, cappuccinos and cakes...
I borrowed the "spit-opening-attack" tactic by the writings of Marc "animal" Mcyoung; usually it's a risky move; either it slow down your opponent or enrage him to the point of kill you. Luckily i caught the guy straight in the eye; also, when I fight outside the gym I really don't try to fight, I try to WIN, ever, big time. This means to me going in the dark, from behind and possibly armed (some buddy help doesn't hurt, either). If I get caught in a streetfight, usually I go for weapons, even if my opponent is obviously weaker than me... I've seen too many times that the only constant in a fight is it unpredictability; sometimes the guy you tought an easy prey reveal himself as a larger bite you can chew on. I did the slash to his arm because it was the nearest target, but after mumbling about I realized I was going for the throath, it's only that when you have fight or flight response your movements are somewhat shorter, I think that is due to the fact that your pushing muscles are averwhelmed by your pulling ones. The spyderco did cut effortlessy trought the denim sleeve, the blade is serrated, and it is razor sharp, I sharpened it with a lansky sharpener with triangle rod. P.S.; once for all: I didn't set the ENTIRE guy on fire (it was log time ago..) only his hairs and face... LOL! |

If you are going for the kill, the stab is better, I use alot a semicircular stab: In a boxer's stance, right hand forward I aim the tip of the blade to right side of my opponent's throath or temple; very sneaky move, fast, powerful and deceptive, I've seen it on Michael Janich's Book "A pratical guide to knife fighting" from paladin press.
Also, I rely heavily on span cuts, they are tight sleshes that cut when you have bypassed your target and are recovering the guard. I train them hanging a seam thread on the ceiling trying to cut it cleanly (difficult!) I borrowed this fron J. Sanchez classical "Slash and thrust" also from paladin's press. I also use a dummy, mine is done with a wooden frame resembling a torso skeleton, wrapped with foam and tape, and then with some garments on. You would be surprised learning how a stab to rhe torso can bent your blade pr redirect it. BTW the best mode to train for a knifefight, apart from sparring, is to have a butcher for friend that leave you the keys of his freezing room.... I'm bordering on insanity now... |

Thanks for the info, Underdog. I also like to cut at meat slabs so don't worry you're not insane.....unless we both are? hmm ![]() I also fill cartons up with liquid, and kind of "shadow spar" with them to get a feel of the blade puncturing, and the ability to not lose your grasp when your blade and hand is wet. I think you mentioned that once before as well. I learned a lot from Paul Vunak on the subject, but I hardly consider myself a knife fighter. I think I will check out some of Marc McYoung's books. I've heard plenty of good things on him. Thanks again, by the way, what kinds of blades do you think are top quality? I carry a Gerber tactical folding blade. But have some others. Knife and sword collecting is somewhat of a hobby of mine. Take care, Ryu |
