Yes it is but it all depends where you are. On the street the last place I would want to be is rolling around on asphalt.

It's not really the fact that the forum is dead it's only that the thread as been use one hundred time's and that is boring in the street you strike you grapple you bite you shoot people simple as that you get in your car and run over the bad guy

Default OK, I'll try again...

Is the guard useful? I say yes and no. I don't think it has any place in the streey at all. If you go to guard in the street, you're pretty much done (concrete factor).

But,
I also think that the guard is what makes BJJ work. In training, the guard positions gives you something to fight against so that you can develop a strong game from the superior positions. You couldn't get the intensity if the guard wasn't there.

At the same time, most BJJers with a strong wrestling background will dominate, forcing the pure BJJer to the guard. So that kind of negates my little guard training thing.

The guard is effective in a street fight. I've wrestled on cement before, its not a big deal. Think about it, for all you that wrestle at your house in your living room (like me) go through this all the time. Its not a big deal and using an upkick from your guard is VERY easy to do.

Also, in the street most BJJ guys I would think would be the ones on top. From my experience, taking down people is even easier than submitting them. Trust me, no one knows the sprawl.

Yeah, I agree the BJJ guy will be on top on the street. Going to guard on concrete, asphalt, etc. still flips me out though. Especially considering that's probably where I'll be at my level. I don't know if you can compare asphalt to carpet either. Carpet has a little padding and at least some softness. Asphalt is very unforgiving. Trust me, I used to have a skateboard

if you're in a fight, you're in a fight. a few scuffs and scrapes from the ground should be the last thing on your mind, compared to the possible damage your opponent is attempting to give you. you can't plan a streetfight. you may be able to make some minor decisions while at more of a distance like should i take an opening, go to the ground or keep it standing, but the "signals" your opponent is giving should determine that, not plannning. when the shit hits the fan, your reactions will decide what your body does. it's afterwards that you look back and think about what actually happened.
just my opinion but i'm no expert...

I would have to say the chance of getting in a fight with just one person at a time is pretty limited. If that is the case and you know you dont have to worry about anyone jumping in then go to the ground if you want to.But,I think most would try their best to avoid it .Now,on the other hand.If some big guy manages to take you down.Your there.Better know your sweeps and escapes. You may need to sweep him toward his friends and escape the other direction.Exit in a big hurry.
