I consider mental training learning patiance and my limits through hard physical confrontation. You can think you are training mentaly, but it will all be very different from the way you imagined it in your head when it really happens. That's why you have to do it with full resistence. To get REAL mental training. The timing. The feel for your opponents weight changes. What you have to do to win against a stronger more powerful opponant. What do you do when you imagine yourself winning, then find yourself mounted with a big guy trying to beat your face in.All the forms in the world wont help you now.Only the expeiriance of 100% full out battle is going to save your butt.No one that looks at a book and then tries it against resisting opponants that know what they are doing is going to pull anything off.You have to get in the pan and get cooked for awhile before you get any flavor to your skills. Hey,I like that.I just made that up.

![]() | Dan Downward, why would you take a post I made on another board and put it up here, only to ridicule it? If you believe the martial arts offer only physical benefits, that is fine. If you are trying to imply that I am not entitled to my own belief, then you are out of line. Likuid, I agree with your observation. Some things can never be seen if people refuse to open their eyes.

![]() | I thought it was a good question and brought it here because no one would ever see it on the other board. Why would you post something on a public forum and then whine when it is seen?If you dont want your posts to be read then dont post. If you only want responces that agree with everything you say, then go to a kung fu forum where everyone is clueless. By the way.The proper spelling of my name is on every post I make. Are you still in grade school?

| Novice | I don't think that spirituality has anything to do with martial arts. I think that your outlook on your life and situations have a direct effect. For example: When I go to train and I think aboout learning and think about beating my opponent without anger. When I use my head instead of my emotions to fight I normally do rather well. But when I am worried about other things or when I am just trying to have a good time I find I don't do as well. Something I could recomend to someone who would ever get into a streetfight is: Don't get angry. Just take care of the problem as qucikly and eficently as possible and then move on. You don't owe anyone your anger or hate. I don't consider this spirituality though it is the mindset of a martial artist. You don't need to meditate or sit under a waterfall and wait for enlightenment.

![]() | oldskulbus- i agree that you don't HAVE to be spiritual to learn a martial art. I was simply pointing out that what you call a proper mindset, the control of anger, someone else might call spirituality. And they might say that if it comes to you that quickly, without meditation(thought), then maybe you are spiritually strong...i think it is a matter of semantics. Although, there are a number of people who take the 'spirituality' part way tooooooo far...at least in my opinion anyway. |

![]() | I was going to post an "evil Ryu" response here, but I figure I'll be serious. Edro and Likuid have the right idea. Most people who think "spirituality" doesn't have anything to do with hard training don't understand that hard training is "spiritual" to a lot of people. I consider myself very spiritual, and I am very much Buddhist to boot, but I still train with reality in mind...and I still train fighting by "fighting" on occasion (not picking fights, but vale tudo kind of thing) To be perfectly honest, I hate fighting. But I train reality because reality is what hits you in a fight. Thinking that someone who spars vale tudo, rolls full contact, and such cannot meditate, find beauty in pure places, things, etc. is not only misinformed, it's downright absurd. ![]() | I give it a C. ![]() Likuid, don't take my "evil Ryu" posts too seriously. The people who know me best know what I'm about. Just like anyone else, I also troll a bit to let off some steam. Nothing personal. Ryu |

![]() | Damn Edro you getting all deep and stuff. I believe contact sparring, grappling, and even shooting are excellent moving meditation. There is nothing as relaxing to me as getting beat on and giving it back. Wrestling someone like Edro, one of my cronies, for an extended period of time until we are both sweating, bleeding, and one of us is tapping is also very good for me mentally. I also enjoy knocking down 8" steel pepper poppers with my pistol from the 50 yard. I believe the spiritual feeling comes from a satisfying workout where you apply your knowledge and skills and feel it work. I'd prefer a good kickboxing match over grappling for general release of stress simply because you get to get and give beatings. |
