I am a little hesitant about learning boxing because of the chances of getting severe brain damage. Do you think I should be if I don't plan to do pro or anything like that? I just want to learn some effective striking without getting brain damage.

It is a simple fact that successive blows to the head cause brain damage.
In boxing, the aim is to inflict punishment by landing blows to the head and upper body. Repeated blows to the head cause the brain to rock against the side of the skull. This kills brain cells due to bleeding in the brain and leads to small areas of scarring. The result is the "punch-drunk" syndrome, where the boxer's loss of brain tissue interferes with his mental functioning. Studies show that all boxers who have trained for any length of time show signs of brain damage. They have inhibited thinking ability and often suffer from headaches, blurred vision, or memory loss. |

At your gym, helmets, and 16oz gloves should be issued anyway. That should minimize the damage. But I have to admit when I am in the ring, I always come home with a headache.

Of course boxing cause brain damage, receiving that amount of shots to the head is sure not "healthy". No problem when your young, but when you get older...problems arise! Like it has been said, it is possible to practice with an helmet and 16 oz gloves.
It is the same with all the full-contact combat sports: the articulations are often badly injured. Even bjj can be rough on your articulatuions if you go "hardcore". Gotta take care of your body...

Helmets help alot. Mouthpieces as well drastically lessen the "impact" that I feel.
Why dont you try and see if its for you?

USA Boxing did a study..and they came to the conclusion that brain damage is a genetic problem...That explains why Jake Lamotta took all those shots and is normal and guys like WIlfredo Benitez barely took a punch and he is punchy.

Tell her unless you plan to box pro. you shouldnt have a problem! Besides, try it first and if you dont like it, drop it. But the chances of extensive damage are slim.
