Thumbs down Shotokan "Groundfighting"

Has anyone seen the July 40th annivery edition of Black Belt Magazine? Well, look at the section about Shotokan Karate Groundfighting...it's good for a laugh.

I like the counter for the mounted gi choke which is comprised of two steps: 1.The bottom person hammer fists the person choking him from above. 2. The bottom person then pushes top person off.

Also, the escape from the naked choke was quite innovative. The setup was the attacker was choking the victim. The attacker was on one knee, and the victim on her side. Step 1. Victim raises the leg she is lying on and kicks attacker in face. Step 2: Victim pushes attacker away. Step 3: Victim kicks attacker again.

i found these techniques rather naive to say the least. Oh yeah, and apparetnty the editors didn't catch the typo 'jujutsu' that occurs every 3 pages.

People shouldn't even post these. I don't even laugh at how stupid it is anymore

Sad but true....

So many karate styles began coming out of the woodwork proclaiming that their systems had groundfighting all along after the Gracies made their debut.

Shows their ignorance.

"jujutsu" is the technically proper way to write the original characters in English.

I saw that article. Most of the time it's something like
"Aikido on the ground" or something like that, maybe not realistic, but at least wrist locks are possible, kind of makes you look at another "view" on the whole thing.

HOWEVER, this Shotokan article was without a doubt the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen passed off as legitimate technique. If you haven't seen it, it is laughable.

I'm all for arts trying to find a solution to their weaknesses, but this was just moronic. And to package it into a 40th Anniv. issue makes it all the worse.

I realize that BB has to cater to an incredibly wide range of arts, but good grief, some of the articles lately have been pure garbage. (this month features a man who breaks coconuts; special guest appearances on Walker, Texas Ranger; and an article on Jet Li.)

I've subscribed to BB for over 5 years, but this will probably be my last. Any suggestions? Gracie? O Tatame?
