Default Stand up training for stocky people?

What styles do you guys recommend in stand up for stocky guys with short legs?

Muay Thai is already out of the question.

Boxing, although I don't see why Muay Thai is out of the question. A lot of Muay Thai involves the clinch or plum. Someplace a stocky person would want to be to even the odds.-ED

The reason I said Muay Thai is out of the question is because people with short legs(like me) would have a hard time reaching the opponent with those kicks. It sucks because I think its a really cool style but I wouldn't be much good in it.

Well,I don't see why you ruled out Muay Thai.I'm 5'10" and "stocky" and I have no problem Beating any of the taller guys when we kickbox, and I'm talking 6'6" and up.Look at Igor vovchanchin for instance,he is short and stocky.Boxing may be your next best bet if you don't wanna train Muay THai though.

I haven't seen Igor Vovchanchin fight much, but doesn't he have short arms but long legs?

From what I've seen he has both short arms and short legs.

I also have kinda short legs,I don't have much of a problem getting in close using kicks.I prefer to be on the inside because of my short arms and legs.

My advice would be to give Muay thai a shot first, and if that doesn't work for you then move onto a boxing gym.But I think you'll like Kickboxing.

Good luck.

I'm 5'9" with a 29" inseam. Them are some pretty short legs. I do fine kicking against taller guys. You just have to have good timing.

While I'm at it, I wanna ask if anyone knows of some good boxing or muay thai schools in the South Bay area.

First let me tell you that I have not formally trained Muay Thai...BUT....I do have short legs! I am 5'6" and what primitive Muay Thai kicks I do use seem to work pretty well b/c my legs, even though short are not skinny, so it hurts guys if I get a good kick in. I would say go ahead and try out Muay Thai. For shorter guys doesn't seem too bad b/c it helps us get in close instead of staying within punching range of a taller guy with long reach.

Hope that helps.

Don't count out muay thai, having short legs is not a restriction.
You might miss some reach but the power of short legs is very big, there are much short dutch punch and kickers (muay thai, karate, even tkd) Who do very well in the ring with there kicks.

If you take a k1 tape with loyd van dams, he is not short but is stocky and he totaly f*cks his oponents with his kicks.

Grahf1,
I believe that Boxing Works in Hermosa Beach has a pretty decent thai program. Oh and I agree with everyone else here that you don't necessarily have to rule out Muay thai just because you are stocky. I've seen some stocky guys who can kick pretty damn hard and the thai clinch techniques may work to your advantage because of your size. Boxing would obviously work well for you also, but I believe that Muay Thai is a better all around art.

Hey! If the 6'6 Farang guys are out of your league you can always fight the Thais!

Talking short guys

Tyson is stocky and he would probably still be champ if he had legit managers and trainers handling him. Early Tyson was just awesome.

Short guys have to be more conscious of keeping their hands up and keeping their head moving. If you are hard to hit on your way in and can get damage done once inside you are a dangerous person.

You shouldn't rule out muay thai if you haven't even trained it yet.
You'll know if it works for you once you start to spar.

by now you've probably noticed that the consensus is that you shouldn't rule out muay thai. I'd like to add another reason...let's say your timing, or positioning, or like you say (which i disagree) body type is off, and you can't reach the body- a crushing thai kick to the leg is just as devastating...so if you like the style, check it out - it doesn't matter what art you do, or if you are short or tall, you will always have to adjust for your personal attributes.

good luck
