Default Getting stronger while losing weight

OK. Guys. I need your advice. Here's my situation.

I'm currently 185 pounds at 5'7". I've got back into lifting weights which is great at increasing my strength but it's also putting on a bit of muscle mass.

At my weight I find 185 simply a hinderence. I find it too heavy and that I'm fighting too much mass for typical movements. But here's why i think i can lose weight. I'm carrying a good 20-30 pounds of fat (from being at an optimal 5 % bodyfat target). This means I'd like to drop those 30 pounds which aren't aiding my performance, while doubling my strength.

How do i do this without putting on unwanted muscle mass?

You need to work out for tone. do high reps with low weights. And don't forget cardio! Lots of running/jogging or if running is to hard for you then you need to do swimming. If you don't have the willpower to do cardio then you will never shed the pounds though.

Boy, about the cardio. When I left for college i was about 137 pounds hehe. I could run 7 miles no problem. But, after a year of dorm food and 13 pound weight gain to 150, it's sooooo hard to run now. But I must say that running burns fat and calories like nothing else. If you run 3-4 miles a day for a week (doesn't matter how fast u run) you will see results FAST!

JaredExtreme,
The Tick is the best show!! "SPOON!!!"

You ever watch "Space Ghost Coast to Coast"? If you like the Tick you will probably like that show.

I'm no expert on weight training but I know that Oldskulbus' advice is wrong (no offence). There is no such thing as working out for tone. That's just a myth perpetuated by the bodybuilding world. You get ripped by having low body fat. Increasing your muscle mass increases your metabolism. So if you lift weights your body will naturally burn more fat. You also need to eat the right diet; high protein, low carbs. If you're going to run do sprints. Jogging is terrible for your body. Plus you don't really need to jog unless you are training specifically for long distance running. Anyway, you should ask Ober for more details. He knows a lot about weight training.

the tick roxors! I've watched space ghost, but it isn't quite the same. E1am, your name sucks and so does your advice. If he just does sprints he's going to tire himself out in 5 minutes and stop burning calories. And how is running bad for your body? Because of cartilage loss that MIGHT hurt you if you run for 15+ years? I dunno about that rest of these guys but I don't have a personal pool that I can swim in, and running is much more excercise than cycling. It's an overall great cardio excercise.

I'm 5'8, now at 165 or so, down from close to 200. I did it through a combination of weights (once or twice a week, lifting sometimes for strength (high weight, low reps), sometimes for endurance (medium wieght, high reps), and cardio - running (not jogging) for 20 to 30 mins three or four times per week. Aiding me was the fact that I moved from Canada to Singapore, where it's like a sauna every time you step outside. I am also eating a lot of local food, which is served in local portions. The food is also loaded with chillis, which also increases your metabolism.

I... Arthur!

Thumbs up

Absolutely E1am. Not only is there no such thing as "tone" jogging has got to be the worst exercise you could do. The human body simply is not designed to jog. It is ment to either walk at a slow pace or sprint at a fast one.

Weight training and sprinting as well as Bjj are great ways to shed pounds. Your gonna have to cut back on the calories also. There is alot of info to divulge in one post. i suggest you do a search engine, check out t-mag.com also.

Hey Jared,

You obviously know very little about working out. Trying reading something that's been written in the last fifteen years. When you run sprints you alternate between sprinting and walking. That's how you keep it up for an extended period of time. Jogging might be great for cardio but it's bad for you knees, back, and ankles. Like HardcoreBJJ said, your body is not designed for jogging. Another exercize that's a great calorie burner is jumping rope. I'm not sure if it's particularly good for you body or not though. But I'd imagine, since you are jumping up and down on the balls of your feet, it's not as stressfull as jogging.

Cool Hey guys

Lets not get in each other's face's about a difference of opinion. E1am I know you mean no offense and maybe I am wrong but I am 6 foot 175 pounds with 3% body fat. I do push ups, free weights, situps, jump rope, run, and JOG. Granted I am not hitting the streets to jog but am doing it while playing Ultimate Frisbee on the grass. Grass is a lot lower impact than asphalut and I do alternate between sprints and jogging. Working out hurts your body. Jump roping, running, and BJJ is all tough on your bones and your joints. All of us are going to be hurting when we are older because of our trainning there is no way around it.
If GuardMaster wants to lose weight he has to burn more calories then he intakes. Anything cardio will work many muscles including your heart (the most important one). Running is the best but if he can't run right of the get go then he should jog till he can run. Jogging may not be the most healthy thing to do but he needs to start somewhere.

Hey everyone, lets follow the EEEEEoneAM recipe for weight loss. It's really simple, don't do anything that might hurt your body in any way. Don't jog because it's bad for your joints. Don't swim because the chlorine will make your skin dry. Don't do BJJ because your back will start hurting. While you're at it, don't live live at all. This means no drinking, eating fast food, or having relationships woth women (relationships with other men are allowed). WoW!! You are a fitness guru EEEoneAM !
