Default Origin of Judo

In 1898 Jugaro Kano invented Judo. It is a Japanese martial art.
It is a combination of his name Ju for Jugaro and Do for WAY.
Or Way of......Way of Jugaro for short.

Cool

danny... you been doin' the BROWN acid again???

His name was JIGORO.

If you look at the book 'Kodokan Judo', by Jigoro Kano, the first chapter is called, 'Jujutsu Becomes Judo'.

Kano learned traditional Jujutsu from many masters of the art, and when developing Judo he had one main requirement, "...to have the techniques fall within an all-pervasive principle: to make the most efficient use of mental and physical energy. Retain those techniques that were in accordance with the principle. Those that were not in accord with it were to be rejected, and in their place I substituted techniques in which the principle was correctly applied." He named the body of techinques "Judo" to distinguish it from it's predecessor (Jujutsu), and this is what is taught at the Kodokan.

He gives the breakdown of the word 'Judo' as: Ju = 'gentleness' or 'giving way' and Do = 'principle' or 'way'. Thus Judo = 'The Way of Gentleness'.

Kodokan = "The School For Studying The Way" (literally)

Kano wanted to develop an art that is truly the "art of giving way". Jujutsu is not this, since it incorporates forms of direct attacks, such as hitting, kicking and choking, and thus the development of Judo.

note: I have a strong feeling that Danny-Boy was just bored when he posted this and that I just wrote all this for nothing.

Train On!

Karl

Default judo

Completely right Karlinhos:
the word judo is composed from two words:
'ju' which means gentle, soft and 'do' which means way or path.
So judo can easily be translated as 'the gentle way'.

Actually,I posted it to find out if what I was being told was true.
I was hoping that I would be corrected if wrong. Now I will ask the person who told me this to read what you wrote and see what he says.

It wouldnt be the first time he gave me bad info.

Thumbs up

hahahaha...!!!

danny-boy, your man is a freak if he tried to really pull that one off. either that or seriously ill-informed.

just go to the book store, to the martial arts section and they should have a copy of jigoro kano's "kodokan judo". you might wanna pick one up, it's quite interesting.

they show quite a few techniques with actual, old photos of kano and one of his students going through the moves. i mean REAL old. b&w historical looking stuff. they look as though they've been pulled from old reel footage.

Train On!

www.judoinfo.com is an excellent online source for information concerning the history and development of judo.

"Judo comes to us from the fighting system of feudal Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu. Dr. Kano, President of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo."
--direct quote from the site.

I recently purchased the book "Three Budo Masters" that relates the lives of Kano, Funakoshi, and Ueshiba, and compares them ( their relationships to each other) at the end of the book. It gives a good description of who did what, and when they did it.

It also has a (very) small section about the origination of Gracie JJ.

The 'Kodokan Judo' book is the premiere work on the essence of Judo, but the history of the man and his art are better told in the biographies of his life.

THX,

SZ

Actually, John has the wife and a cheesy smile to rival mine. I think I saved the pic somewhere to torment him with, I'll have to see if I can find it. Heheeh.
