We do a lot of ground transportation drills that are kick butt for cardio. But these are based more on shoulder, back, and forward rolls, falls and the like.

I don't know how useful that would be for BJJ events, but the falling and rolling drills we do provide training in three aspects of newaza:

1) Going to the ground on your own terms. If you are not trained on how to fall (i.e. how to be thrown) then WHEN you are thrown, slammed, dropped, or taken down in some manner it's probably going to hurt more than it should.

2) Cardio! Everyone who has done any groundwork knows that it is a brutal cardio workout. Training solo isn't as intense as working with a training partner, but it still gives you a good workout.

3) Coordination. When we first start tumbling on the ground, our equilibrium goes nuts. We have people getting seasick on top of the fatigue they get. Again, I don't know if this applies to BJJ, but in Judo and Jujutsu that I have done, it is a great help.

Hope this helps,

SZ
