Thumbs up Helio Gracie in Miami

Yesterday, I had the chance to take a 1 hour private class and a group class with Helio Gracie. WOW!!! What an experience! I train privately with Pedro Valente at the Gracie Academy of Miami and it felt great to know that all that I have been taught so far was identically taught to me in the fashion endorsed by Helio himself. Helio has made it a point all week in stressing that his purpose is not to teach us new techniques but on refining our ability to execute the moves using purely technique and no strength. The man is 89 years old and approximately 135 pounds soaking wet; however, he taught nine classes yesterday and had no problem humbling the more advanced belts with his technique. I can honestly say that I have been fortunate enough to train with a few Masters that are the head of their respective systems, but Helio was one of the warmest, humble instructor I have ever trained with.

That's great, man!

A friend of mine went to the Torrance Academy and had a chance to train when Helio was there once. He said that he was afraid of hurting the old guy until he started rolling with him........and started tapping from a wicked collar choke.

Quite a man.......I hope I could have HALF of that constitution when I'm that old.
