The following may make me seem rather thick, but throughout all of the years that I've been a fan and student of BJJ, I've never bothered to ask the question:
What are the stripes on your belt for?........and how do you earn them? I've heard them referred to as "combat stripes".....but I've never seen such a promotion in person. I've been dabbling in BJJ in different school for the last five years, but I've always hesitated asking about them. SO......FINALLY.....I'm going to come right out with it....and ask.

i know royce just tells guys to "poot a strip on yor belt".
it's just to indicate ability within a belt color. it makes sense, think about it, are fresh blue belts not quite as good as 4-stripers???

That easy, huh?
Next question: Who's authorized to issue rank in BJJ? Is it exclusively a black belt or are other belts (i.e. Purps or Browns) that are given the nod for promotion?

Lactase:
some schools believe in awarding stripes and others don't, just like in belt promotions. There are some instructors that believe in belt tests and others that just give out the higher belt when they feel you are there. I know of no test for stripes, but instead, it's how you are progressing and if you compete, how you do in the competition, even if you may lose in a tournament, you may still get a stripe. That wasn't a dumb question at all, what was dumb was WAITING 5 years to ask. |

Some instructors use stripes, some do not. They are an indication of seniority within a rank, but do not change the rank. They are a good guide of how close you are to the next rank, but certainly no guarantee how long you'll be a '4-striper'.
I am not a black-belt, but I have permission from my instructor, a 2nd-degree black-belt, to promote folks to blue-belt. - Kyle |

I've been training 7 months and no stripes. hehe oh well. It's better not to have stripes on your white belt because then people underestimate you. Then out of nowhere, dim mata !!
