Wink Florida State Grappling Championships - NAGA Ranked

The FFC and NAGA present the

FLORIDA STATE GRAPPLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

September 22, 2001 - Miami, FL

The Free-Style Fighting Championship (FFC) is back again in south Florida! We started the FFC last year because we felt that there weren’t enough mixed martial arts and grappling events in south Florida. Our last grappling tournament, the FFC Submission Grappling Open, was a great success - with over 110 grapplers from 28 different schools.

THE FLORIDA STATE GRAPPLING CHAMPIONSHIP is ranked by the North American Grappling Association (NAGA). NAGA is the largest grappling tournament circuit in North America. A total of over 3,616 fighters have graced the NAGA’s tournament circuit mat and they aren’t stopping there. This tournament is to determine who is the best in Florida! The winner of each division will be the 2001 Florida State Champion! NAGA’s last event in Florida, the FFC Submission Grappling Open, was a great success – and this event is expected to be even better. This is the first State Championship ranked by NAGA in Florida!

We will be having 37 NO-GI Divisions for Kids, Teens, Women, Seniors, and Adults (Beginner through Advanced). The large number of divisions helps eliminate the possibility of mismatches and provides you with the fairest and most comprehensive tournament structuring in the country. This event is strictly a NO-GI tournament (Gi/Uniforms are not required – at a minimum shorts with a draw string, Cup, and Mouthpiece must be worn). Medals will be given out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and a Championship Belt will be awarded to the winner of the Absolute Division! All competitors will be grappling on 26’ by 26’ mats. The mats are new high quality zebra mats.

COMPETE IN MULTIPLE DIVISIONS AT NO EXTRA COST:
Half of the competitors in a tournament will lose their 1st match. To help you get the most for your money, you may compete in as many divisions as you like at no extra cost! For example, if you are a lightweight beginner, you may compete in middleweight beginner or lightweight intermediate – at no extra cost!

Not only is this one of the largest and best tournaments in Florida, it is also one of the most affordable! If you pre-register before September 8, the price for competitors is only $35! If you miss the pre-registration deadline, you can still register at the door for $50. The price for spectators is $10 at the door.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The FFC will be introducing a new Free-Style Fighting Division! Free-Style Fighting is a competitive sport similar to grappling but allows strikes to the body and legs. You may punch, kick, or knee your opponent anywhere in the body but not to the face, head, spine, or groin. There are absolutely no strikes allowed to the head. You may kick your opponent's leg but not directly to the knee. On the ground, the same rules apply. Striking is allowed on the ground. As far as submissions, all submissions are allowed (except fora few exceptions, ex. finger breaks, etc.). There will be a time limit with an overtime if necessary. There will be 3 judges. On the registration forms are the complete rules and details - if you are going to compete, then you MUST read and understand all the rules listed on the form.

If you would like to register for the Free-Style Fighting Division, the cost is $35 if you pre-register before September 8 or $50 at the door. However, if you register for the grappling tournament, you may compete in the Free-Style Fighting division at no extra cost! If you are pre-registering for the grappling tournament and want to compete in the Free-Style Fighting Division, make sure to include both registration forms (grappling form and Free-Style Fighting form). The Free-Style Fighting division will start after the grappling tournament is over - allowing competitors to easily compete in both sports.

To Pre-Register, visit the tournament website at www.FFCfights.com

There is less than 2 weeks left to pre-register! If you plan on competing, save $15 by registering before the pre-registration deadline on September 8.
A lot of great grapplers competed in the last event: Pablo Popovitch, Shane Dunn, Hermes Franca, Wald Bloise, Federico Pereira, Jeremy Bass, Leonel Perez, Mike Cardoso, Jorge Pereira, Andres Marquez, Wilson Goudeia, Martin Vila, and many others. Expect to probably see the same guys back plus many more! I have spoken to Edson Diniz (BJJ Black Belt and 2nd in BJJ Mundials) and he plans on competing. Efrain Ruiz (FFC Middleweight Champion) and Joe Cervantes (FFC Lightweight Finalist) will also be fighting in the FFC Division.

So if you aren't planning on competing, you should at least swing by and see Florida's best battle each other on the mat!

To see some of the action from the last event - please click on the following link and download our highlight videos:

If you are planning on attending - whether as a competitor or a spectator - please post a reply to this thread. I want to have a basic idea of how many forum members will be attending. Thanks.
