Question Jaw Surgery...What to do for 6 months?

Well guys, I had jaw surgery two days ago in order to correct my underbite. The doctor said I shouldn't do any sports/wrestling for 6 months until the bone is fully healed. So basically my options are weights, bagwork, and running/sprinting. I already have a weights plan, but I just need to incorporate the running and bagwork. Any ideas?

id just work on bjj technique its no harder on you than running master those techniques that you wish you had more time for ..just dont spar or practice takedowns work on you boxing combinations do pad work ...this is a golden opportunity for you..practice foot work ..hope this helps..

Lots of Thai Pad Work. LOTS Boxing drills, maybe its a good time to concentrate on your cardio? Light grappling drills. Also a very good time to work technique and fine tuning on your striking.

Read up on the death touch.That way you can stop all this silly grappling nonesence.
Seriously though,how much did they do ?Are you wired together?
You may want to play it safe and just take a vacation from anything that requires training with a parner.A slip of a jab,a roll the wrong way,could be quite painful if not detrimental to your well being.Doctors dont like it when they have to do stuff over because the patiant ignored their advice.
Jogging,weights,long hikes up steep terrain,pushups,all kinds of stuff you can do till you heal.Study tapes or go to some different schools and watch.Try and gain some knowledge during your time off,then come back and try to apply it.
Try doing something you used to like to do but havent had time for in awhile.Like hunting or fishing.

Dan, the surgery took around 5 hours. They basically cut off my top jaw from my face and used titanium plates to fasten it back on. My jaw was wired shut for 1.5 days, but it's open now. I think I might get back into some of the karate kata stuff for some excercise, but what's a good muay thai/bagwork video to get?

I'm afraid I'm not the guy to ask about Muay Tae.I'm a traditional TKD guy with my feet.A poor boxer and a mediocre grappler.
I would click on Tim Mousels email and ask him.He teaches it,so he would be the guy I'd ask.

It sounds like even just doing the technique part of a BJJ class might be too much for a while. Think of all the moves that can put stress on your jaw (triangle, choke, arm-bar). If you aren't going to go to BJJ join a real boxing or muay thai gym. You don't have to spar. You can just do bag work, shadow boxing, foot work, etc. That way you can still train hard, stay in shape, and improve your stand-up while your at it. It's also best to train with a coach who will correct your form as opposed to doing bag work on your own (that's what it sounded like you were planning). Good luck.

that sounds painful. I hope everything works out and you are back in business in no time at all.

As Dan has been saying, change is opportunity. Sounds like you are already well prepared for this change. Kata practice seems like a good thing to do.

Don't let the bags you beat on come back and smack you. I can't imagine the pain in that one....

yeah, you can practice your kata...if you'd like another jaw reconstruction in the future! ha!
bjj does not have anything that resembles kata... unless you score a takedown, then pass guard, work for a submission and fall into an armlock, all while you are the only person in the room, you are not doing "brazillian dragon no. 5".

The kata stuff is funny. But anyway, this whole surgery thing has kinda taught me a lesson, and that's not to take things for granted. While I was in the hospital for one day, with IV's strung into me, and vomitting up my own blood, I realized at the young age of 19 my own mortality. It made me recognize that someday I'll probably be sitting in a bed like that for the last time. I don't want to get too mushy here, but never take your independance and health for granted guys. They are the most important things in your life.

If you have some cool friends/training partners that you can depend on and trust, you could practice BJJ technique with no force or resistance. This will at least keep your body in tune with the techniques. Nothing will replace rolling and competing, but at least you will be doing something.

Yeah, I'll definetly be practicing my triangles/armlocks from the guard with a bud during my time off since that's what I consider my weaknesses. Boy, what I would give to be able to chew a quarter pounder right now...

jared, im 17 and i also have an underbite..
they say that in one year i have to have some corrective braces and a year after that im gonna get corrective surgery. coudl you tell me how it is like and what the process was like for you?
how does it feel now? growing up, i always felt that i was like the only one who had this underbite, i used to be kinda ackward about it, but now im used to it.
how long is it until you can talk and stuff?
