This past weekend I watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, then a film came on, Twin Warriors with Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh.
It is a totally different experience watching these movies now that I have a solid MA foundation. I grew up watching Chinese Kung Fu Theatre (I sure do miss those shows...) Anyway, my point is that I can really enjoy the "fantasy" of the old style martial arts movies. Those that had people flying through the air and walking up walls. Where one super dude could come in and wipe out 50 bad guys, and still have enough strength to lay the smack down on the Evil leader. Compare/contrast this with all the "realistic" movies by Seagal, Norris, Van Damme and Bruce Lee. We can look at these and pick them apart move by move and rolling our eyes the entire way. Not to say that these movies aren't entertaining, but I much rather enjoy watching the movies that are listed as fantasy to those who try to come off realistic. What do you think? SZ |

Ya know, in the new movie "Training Day" there is one scene where Ethan Hawk kicks the shit out of these tow druggies using what looks suspiciously like MMA tactics. Rear naked choke (sorta) single leg takedown (kata-forms style) and full mount with punches (Tito-style).

Someone should start up a martial arts channel. All martial arts, all the time.
![]() We could have guest appearances by famed MMA artists, and movie stars. Movie marathons of all the great, and not so great, martial arts movie stars. We could have a show for the philosophical aspects of different martial styles. We could televise judo matches, mma competitions, Abu Dhabi, collegiate championship wrestling, all olympic competitions (judo, TKD, wrestling etc), and anything and everything to do with martial arts competitions. A special hour of Tae Bo every morning. ![]() Yoga and Tai Chi as well. And to top it all off, we could have a special broadcast once a week from the Peoples Republic of China, featuring none other than the famous FlyingClockChoke himself to tell us how evil Amerika is and how f'd up we all are, always have been, and always will be. This would be broadcast from the steps of the Center for Humanity and Better Living, in downtown Beijing. But hey, it's only a rough idea..... SZ |

I saw Iron Monkey on Friday night. This is what I was talking about earlier, this is a Chop Saki movie at it's finest. Complete with flying kung fu masters who tout different styles through old Chinese cities.
Complete with an evil bad guy and the same old patented "Evil Laugh", this movie has all the needed ingredients of a classic. Each artist has a different style, and they trash talk style points during the fights. The "Shadow Kick", the "Buddhist Palm" are just a few that stand out. This movie is definutely worth going to see. My wife, bless her heart, asked me after the movie "Can they really do that stuff?" I said "Heck ya! You saw it didn't you?!?" Side note: Quentin Tarantino was involved in the relrelease of this film. How strange is that? Piece, SZ |

I enjoyed this movie even if it is a shameless re-mastered re-release to capitalize on CTHD's success.

LOL. There used to be a channel that showed MA's all the time in Japan. It was called Samurai TV. I don't know if it still exists there, but it was pretty cool.
When it comes to MA films, I'm especially fond of Legend of the Drunken Master , aka Drunken Master 2. That, my friends, is a good movie.
