Is the triangle either reserved for or more effectively performed by people with longer limbs? It just seems the space created by my triangle (5'8", regular build) is so small that only a complete novice would get so far into it that I could finish the triangle and lock it with my other leg?
Thanks |

Yes, it will be easier for longer limbed people to lock the triangle on. The margin for error is larger. You will need to focus on the mechanics, making sure your body position is correct. If you have problems, drill it repeatedly, with and without resistance.
It's not impossible by any means for you to develop it. I am 5'8" with a stocky build and I regularly go to the triangle. It is something that you will need to develop more than some other submissions to pull off on non-beginners. - Kyle |

Raise your hips off the ground and try rotating to the side so you're not directly in front of him. Your head goes to the same side as the leg across the back of his neck. As you do this pull his trapped arm across even more. Make sense? If you stay right in front its very hard to finish unless you have stilt legs.

This isn't a technique forum. It's a political and religious forum! Oh wait, I guess it isn't..... Good discussion, wish I had something to contribute! ![]() SZ |

Going with the flow, How do you avoid getting stacked when trying to sink the choke?

I usually press my hips forward during a triangle, so it makes it harder for them to stack and chokes them more, I notice alot of people dont press the hips forward for some reason. then if they start stacking ill try to reposition myself at a better angle, if they are standing and the leg is available ill go for that

Do you mean forward as in towards the guy vs. up like when you are locking in the choke or an armbar?

Are you kiddin me? That Barret Yoshida guy from ADCC has got the meanest triangle I ever seen and he is 5'5 !!!
Your mechanics are probably screwed up....also remember that FLEXIBILITY as well as LEG STRENGTH are both important, and are also size irrevelant......If anything, having long legs would make you more succeptable to various ankle/knee locks and guard passes using the legs..... |

What I like to do is after the hold is on just scoot my hips a little to the side. I.E. if I have my right leg around the back of the neck I will scoot to that side.
As for the triangle working for bigger people I think that does not matter, cause you are just wrapping your legs around a small area of your opponents body. |

Triangle chokes don't necessarily have to be applied from being on your back. In Judo they have wicked triangle attacks against your opponent when he is on all fours. There are triangle attacks when you sprawl against a wrestling shot.
