Has anyone on the forum been trained with firearms? If so where/when? What are your opinions on firearms as self-defensive weapons? Is the firearms training part of your school curriculum?

About 10 years ago here in LA
My friend helps me and he's taken many different self defense fire arms classes. Some here in Southern California and others in the desert like Arizona. And he's shown and trained me in what he learned.

"What are your opinions on firearms as self-defensive weapons?"

I believe that qualified people should be able to carry a firearm for protection. Qualified means that there is some safety coursed taken and passed and also a need must be shown to be able to carry a firearm.
I carry a firearm, every day.
If you are going to carry a firearm for self defense, get the biggest calibre you can handle. Don't trade concealibility with calibre size.
Leave the .22's for others.
Train as much as you can, as in anything, the more you train, the more profecient you will be and in a duress situation, it will be more like second hand nature to react.
If you are going to carry a firearm, you have to be willing to walk away from a lot to avoid confrontations since you are carrying a deadly weapon. Firearms are not meant to be brandished as a threat or to be macho. Instead, a firearm should be drawn as the last resort and to defend yourself in a life threatening situation and nothing else.

Yes i have...

LoL..i used to carry a gun 24/7 in case they have one..In Los Angeles you hardly fight and someobe not get in it or shoot..

you fight and/or drop shells

380 cal.

380 was my weapon of choice ..small, compact, nice size rounds, and it can be hidden easly..

i hit the shooting range often, and its fun.
i was carrying a gun at age 14 but i rarely carry one now..only if the spot is hot

I guess you'al will be able to guess my age by this post...lol...I was in our Military from 1964 to 1968 during Viet Nam...cant say what I did , but some of it is still classified...I was determined to survive, so when I went thru our Combat school I got the Highest Achievment award...whoppy ...I am still here, but have learned to keep my mouth shut and walk away from trouble...for those times when you can't ...I fully agree with having nothing less than a 9mm or 38 special as a primary weapon with a 380 back up...a pistol grip 12 gauge is a real show stopper...lol...AK47 is a another handy show stopper...against Kevlar...a good Kevlar vest and Lexan clip board can come in handy too...Respect your fellow man and stay out of trouble, but if trouble comes be fully prepared for anything and everything...Johnny (No Belts and No BS)

Most traditional martial arts have defenses against guns and knives. What I was interested in is if you had training with guns?

Uhh, everything I learned about gun disarmament was based on an experiment performed with wax bullets and armor. Everytime the defense went to the inside of the attacker, you got shot. Everytime the defense pushed to the outside, well some of the time, you didn't get shot. This is just the natural tendancy of the hand to open when swung out and close when swung inward.

After learning this, I was taught a few simple resposes for if the gun was pointed at your head, gut, or gonads - and I mean simple - nothing fancy. If from the rear, guess they are right handed - and use that to turn the right way.

First most important rule of gun disarmament (other than the direction) - move your body the opposite way you push the gun so that there is snowballs chance in hell a bullet will hit you. Proceed to disarm from there - quick and simple

Knifes are dangerous. You will get cut. With these you just gotta keep it simple, evade, disarm and strike (preferably strike then disarm) like lightening - you will get cut though. If you have a belt, I'd use that, or put your shoes over your hands if you can, over shirt or coat....resourcefullness.

My favorite knife defense is to run, personally.

I guess "statistics" show that if your are stuck up, you give them what they want, and they don't leave, you will die, so go out in style. I'm not sure where those statistics came from, but I'd rather fight than get killed, but not over my wallet.

This post wasn't about unarmed defense of a gun, but thanks for the tips... I will start wearing an extra pair of shoes on my hands from now on.

Speaking of that, what is the single biggest advantage of a gun over not having a gun?

In my opinion, the biggest advantage to having a gun is to "strike" a devastating blow from a safe distance. You have a serious length of weapon advantage over any other type of weapon. I can be 25 yards away and almost certainly destroy any opponent. But when I come up and stick it against your body then I lose my biggest advantage. Stupid thing to do in my opinion.

What do yous guys think?

gun=power and it seems like more power when its in someone's face...also the person sticking it in your face doesn't really think your gonna try anything, afterall, he's got the gun..

Any gun is just a tool, YOU are the weapon.

It is a very important tool however. In this country we are blessed with the right to own a firearm. This right should be excersied. In some areas you can get a concealed weapns permit, post backround check and training.

Guns are not majic but if you learn and train to use them they are fantastic tools.

It's a felony to have a stick with you but it's only a misdemeanor to have a loaded, concealed firearm!!!
