Question Help me w/ my workout

Hi all. I was on before. Well, due to some instances, I did not continue w/ my workout before and I have started up again. Please review this and tell me what I should do for the best workout to lose weight and add "tone" to my muscles.

Diet:
Vegetarian diet.
Mainly consisting of salads with cold pasta, fat free sauce, tomatoes, and cheese. Also, eating vegetarian soup, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits with honey, and strictly water. I'm thinking of starting to drink orange juice as well. Fruits eaten, are fruit salads, peaches, apples, and bananas.

Workout:
3-4 times a week.

Day1/3:
Jogging 1.5 miles.
Biceps
Stomach exercises
Chest
Lats

Day2/4:
Jogging 1.5 miles.
Triceps
Shoulders
Back
Stomach excercises

Does that sound good and optimal for losing weight? What would you recommend as the best exercises? I would like to incorporate the best way, so I'm not sure if the free weights are the best way or the weight machines. What is your opinion? What should I add/change/remove?

Thanks.

Uh...are you a vegan or something? Were's the protein in your diet man! If you are looking for a decent diet and are planning on training, pick up the book titled, The Zone by Barry Sears. It'll give you a decent idea of how to balance your diet and some info on training.

With the diet and training regimine you have listed, you're gonna burn out quickly and quit losing weight...or when you continue to lose weight, you're going to lose a fair amount of muscle as well.

So, work on balancing the diet to start, add in protein to your diet (probably along the lines of .7g protein/lb of lean body weight.

Then cut down on the carbs.

The workout...I'll get to that later, but a decent variant can be found on the t-mag.com site....just look up workouts there and you should find a modified german volume training routine that should be good. Follow that.

The reason I'm eating no meat is, because I overeat meat, so I have been a vegetarian for 2 weeks. It's basically a way for me to lose weight and get into better shape. I'm not grossly overweight or anything, but I do have a bit of a beer belly, so I'm hoping cutting down on the meat (keep in mind I live in a dorm, so almost all the meat avaiable is greasy as hell). What do you suggest? Is vegetarianism not the best way to lose the fat? I intend to lose the fat first, and start eating PROPER amounts of meat afterwards...something like that.

Can you give me an example of the most commonly eaten carbs?

Does this mean no bread, pasta, chips, pizza, etc..?

No carbs means nothing good basically, eh? Only vegetables/fruits?

In all seriousness, I have met maybe 1 vegetarian in my like that looked remotely athletic. Otherwise, all of them have been either overweight or just didn't look all that great.

Your body needs protein to be healthy. Cutting protein completely from you diet is not healthy. You need to learn moderation. The zone diet would help you out, since you'd learn to break down your eating habits into three categories of 30-30-40...which is percentages for the amount of faq, carbohydrates and protein you should eat. You will lose weight this way while maintaining your energy levels--and it will be a hell of a lot healthier than doing a horrible rendition of veganism (which your example of a balanced vegetarian diet is terrible).

Eating cafeteria food can be difficult, but if you get on a plan like the zone, you'll learn how to break it down properly.

carbs are sugars...they can be simple or complex, which means bread, pasta, cereal, grains, fruit, etc.

I do not think you have to completely cut carbs out after 6 pm, getting your eating habits under control is more important.

You've really met vegetarians that were fat? Interestingly, the vegetarians I have met were actually incredibly skinny. I have never met an overweight vegetarian, nor can I even imagine that. Regardless, so fruits have the "bad" carbs that I'm supposed to stay away from? I don't understand..I thought eating fruits/vegetables were always healthy and non-fattening. Like I said, the only meat in my cafeteria are greasy chicken or disgustingly greasy pizza.

Can you give me an example of what you would eat on a typical day? I mean, eating salad can't be a bad thing, eh? Would you suggest adding a moderate amount of meat ON TOP of eating that salad? That can be done easily for me.

Thanks again atomic.

Tone - do you mean endurance training - if so, you should be running a lot more than 1.5 mi jog - like a 4-5mi jog, or a distance where you get at least 30 minutes of a good sweat. If you just wanna have endurance, I'd just do body-weight excercises - push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squat-thrusts - and all the variations thereof. Swimming is good for anything that ales you!

How come you don't have any leg exercises?

I don't have leg exercises, because I'm jogging! That's good enough I think.

I'm still in a bind...

Lightbulb Leg condition

I wouldn't consider that a 1.5 mile jog does a great deal to condition your legs. If you are in decent shape this should be fairly easy for you. You can work your legs to increase speed and strength. Depending on the type of tournament you may wish to focus on one or the other.

Good luck.

If you can't/won't do leg exercises, work in sprints and hills to your jogging routine.

1.5 mi is really nothing for your legs - if you did speed work, yes, but just jogging really doesn't do much for your legs.

Riding a bike, squat thrust, hindu squats, speed work - try the mi in 5 min - there's a leg workout for ya

Do like a 50, 100, 200, 400 ladder, and back down - run them in good training times though, like at least 7sec 50, 14sec 100, <30 200 <60 400 - and then top all that off with some distance - 3-5 mi, there's some leg work!

plyometrics are great for explosive leg power too! Just plain old shadow boxing and jumping rope can really increase your mobility and stamina - working your legs arms, everything
